As many experts agree, it is a common mistake to believe or think that creativity is an innate talent, which would mean that children have it or not. But this, in reality, is not true. As a parent, it may come as a surprise that your perception is often much more creative than you actually think.

Not surprisingly, they may even come up with some innovative ideas to make the world more futuristic than any adult would dare to dream. Since creativity is the key to success in almost everything we do, it becomes an important component and primary focus of organizations in any field. Due to the advantages it provides on a daily basis, it is essential to encourage this type of thinking in children from a young age.

And unlike what you might think at first, the truth is that creativity is not limited only to musical or artistic expression. It is also essential for linguistic, scientific, mathematical, spatial, naturalistic, social and even emotional intelligence, among others. But how can we encourage this creativity among the little ones in the house? We offer you an explanatory guide that will help you depending on the age of the child.

Encouraging creativity in children

Creative development in children from 3 to 5 years old

If you are the father or mother of a child between 3 and 5 years old, it is very likely that you have already realized that their world is surrounded by imagination and magic. In the preschool years, for many children their creativity will tend to peak before the age of 6, after which it will begin to decline with the beginning of the school years, and the developmental drive toward conformity.

At the age of 3, children have officially entered Piaget's preoperational period, the hallmark of which is the ability to use representational thinking and symbols in order to represent something else. For example, at this stage the child is able to represent that he is riding an imaginary horse simply with the help of a broom handle.

Shortly after, the 3-year-old discovers that he is able to place blocks on top of each other or doodle.

When it comes to encouraging creativity at this stage of a child's life, there are some useful tips and guidelines that can be very helpful:

• Promoting creative problem solving. We can ask the child open-ended questions that have nothing good or bad, encouraging them to tell us why they think the way they do (this way, we will not only be promoting creativity, but also the development of language and cognition). Of course, we must accept any answer he gives us as sufficient, but it is always advisable to invite him to go a little further with more questions or curiosities, so that he can be even more inspired by the answers.
• Inviting him to create. We could make a list of things for the little one to find (for example, something that has color, anything smooth, or things that smell good), and then use them in a creation. It's also a good idea to have a wide variety of recyclable materials (such as cardboard boxes) available, to let you do what you want with them.
• Provide a wide variety of experiences. When building our child's knowledge base, a good option is to explore with him different places that can be very useful, such as going to museums, visiting libraries, or even simply exploring different neighborhoods in the city.
• Encouraging creative storytelling. An excellent idea is to invite our child to make drawings that are related to the stories or satires he tells. Even in your favorite story it might be helpful to make some changes. For example, if the little one likes Goldilocks, we could make the main character actually one of the bears, or have the story take place on a boat instead of a house in the middle of the forest.

Creative development in children from 6 to 7 years old

It is common for children to reach this age anxious, creative and tremendously curious. As they get older they become increasingly creative and skillful, especially in using their increasing knowledge of the world to participate in solving problems that may arise in their daily lives.

Thanks to this mastery, they continue to show relatively high levels of confidence in their own abilities. What's more, at this age it is extremely common for them to be very motivated, they enjoy challenges and retain a lot of fantasy and imagination in their play.

• Encourage experimentation. Since at this age children already venture to read on their own, we could encourage divergent thinking with the help of suitable children's novels. It is also possible to use new and unexpected materials when making crafts at home.
• Make discovery a process. It is not always advisable to be the first to give the answer. On the contrary, it is advisable to invite the child to do it alone.
• Inspire perseverance. Possibly we are faced with one of the most well-known and characteristic traits of children during this stage, so we could take advantage of the child's natural propensity to continue with something challenging or different.
• Expose him to different ways of doing things. Not everything is black and white. And, on this occasion, a good idea is to offer the child different options when doing the same thing.
