The first point is to establish priorities. Above all, vacations are meant to be enjoyed. Whether you do sun and beach tourism, mountains or if you take the opportunity to visit cities and enjoy the famous Holy Week processions, rest must take priority. Duties and tasks should be in the background, while time is dedicated to enjoyment.
Take advantage of family time
Every day it becomes more difficult to enjoy those small moments in which children and parents organize a good excursion to the countryside, a visit to an exhibition or an evening movie session. The options are endless and it is always advisable to carry out those activities that allow the entire family to participate. Board games are also a great option while the family is at home!
Establish a routine
Whether the child has to do homework or not, it is important to have an organization. We should not allow the child to change their schedules excessively and become unbalanced during the vacation period. By establishing a more relaxed daily schedule during the school term, we will ensure that it is not difficult for them to adapt to the daily routine of school again.
Just enough time, no more than an hour
Doing homework does not have to be a continuous struggle between parents and children and to do so, work problems must be avoided. Between half an hour and forty-five minutes is the ideal time that children should dedicate daily to completing school tasks, never more than one hour a day. It is important that the child takes charge and is responsible for his or her duties.
Continue and reinforce the reading habit
Parents and teachers try to instill a love of reading throughout the year and the vacation period must be used to reinforce it. Reading, in addition to being a pleasure and fostering the imagination, is an important tool for learning and will make it easier for children to regain their rhythm when they return to school.
Use playful activities as learning experiences
Museums, theaters and cultural visits can be as educational as they are fun. Therefore, it is recommended to go to adapted places where children can have fun and learn at the same time. Learning through play is much more penetrating and is remembered for longer than formal learning.
If there have been problems with learning, define if support is necessary to reinforce what has been learned.
Sometimes the cognitive process is carried out positively, but more slowly. In these cases it is advisable to reinforce the knowledge learned to avoid forgetting it during the vacation period. Supporting knowledge with exercises, readings and positive reinforcement is essential.
#StopHomework
It is a recurring struggle. Children come home with so much homework that they don't have time to play or read; parents also doing homework and family life becomes complicated. For this reason, the Spanish Confederation of Associations of Parents of Students, CEAPA, which integrates more than 11,000 associations of mothers and fathers of Students throughout our country, is once again fighting for the eradication of school homework, especially in the upcoming Easter holidays, but without forgetting the day to day.
CEAPA wants to highlight the following issues in this regard:
- Homework is not related to school success.
- Homework represents, to a large extent, the failure of the educational system, which overloads boys and girls with tasks to “consolidate” learning that is not being achieved properly in school. At CEAPA we have always stated that boys and girls should complete the teaching and learning process at school, within their school hours.
- Homework, far from promoting the integral development of the person, is part of the harmful legacy of an obsolete pedagogical method based on memorization and repetition of content.
- They cause social inequalities: whether a boy or girl performs them better or worse depends on the socioeconomic and cultural level of their environment. While some families try to help their sons and daughters, others resort to private classes or academies and many others do not have the educational level or the money to be able to pay for this support. In addition, homework in many cases counts in the grades and failure to do it can be grounds for sanctions.
- The more families feel the need to resort to private classes and teachers to complete the education of their sons and daughters, the more the regulated educational system will be failing in its objective of educating the entire school population and guaranteeing equal opportunities.
- They create tensions between fathers and mothers and sons and daughters. Furthermore, many times, they are left without playing or doing other activities because they have to do their homework, which generates more rejection. It is true that boys and girls have to learn what their obligations are, but homework is not the vehicle for this, nor can it be the reason that makes them waste their time.
- They constitute a problem in family conciliation as they do not have time to supervise work outside of school.
- Minors need time to do sports, cultural or leisure activities, which also contribute to their personal development.
