Having two children at the same time is a double source of joy, but also of work. The needs of the newborn, which are not few, are multiplied by two: two feedings, two baths, two changes of clothes, two diaper changes, two crying babies...
At first it is normal to feel overwhelmed, it seems that the day will never come to an end and the night is not usually exactly a haven of peace... But, over time, and especially with good organization and a lot of logistics, everything takes on a tone of normality and the couple really enjoys their two babies.
To help parents in a hurry, we spoke with 5 parents of twins. They, better than anyone, know how to handle themselves better in the chaotic situations that parents sometimes experience twice. Take good note.
1. Synchronized they go better (if possible)
"The midwife of the postpartum courses taught us to 'synchronize' our twins in all possible areas and this has been the key concept to organize our family life. After a month, when they were both already breastfeeding well, we approximated their schedules until they were breastfeeding together, then we began to introduce them to solids at the same time and later, we did the same with meals, games, baths...
We try to get both of them to do the same thing at the same time. It doesn't bother them, since they are used to being together since the womb. And for us it means a huge saving in time and energy to be able to attend to both at the same time because they do the same activity.” Victor, father of two 3-year-old twins and a 5-year-old girl.
2. But, be careful, even if they are twins, they are not clones
"Yes, a twin of the girl. The pediatrician explained to me that each child has their own biological clock and although it is useful for us to do things at the same time, it is not always possible and we do not have to force them. We must be patient. If we respect their needs, in the long run everything will be better."Ana María, mother of a girl and a 4-year-old boy
3. Everything noted
"With so much fuss at home and the accumulated fatigue, it is very difficult to remember everything. To avoid overlooking anything, I kept an agenda with the tastes and habits of each baby. It is useful to inform the pediatrician about the behavior of the little ones." Carol, mother of twins twice (5 and 2 years old). how each one evolves. And incidentally, several people can also take care of them (the father, the nanny, etc.) without the need for many explanations.”Ana María
4. A safe environment
"In the place where you spend the most time during the day, create a space where you can leave one of them without worrying while you dedicate yourself to the other. It can be a crib or a playpen with wheels - the only thing that matters is that it is a safe place." clothes) and put pillows inside them. They already have their emergency playpen.” Victor “I always change my twins' diapers on a blanket on the floor. This way I can take care of the second child in an emergency without endangering the safety of the little one you are changing at that moment.” Alba, mother of two 20-month-old girls.
5. Bathrooms: one at a time
"Have everything prepared so as not to lose sight of any of the children at any time, when they are on the changing table or in the bathtub." Victor "To be able to clean both of them without the help of another person, I put the bathtub on the bathroom floor. While one is enjoying his bath, the other is sitting in the hammock next to him, entertaining himself watching his little brother." Susana "From the sixth month onwards, plastic bath seats that are fixed to the bathtub and prevent them from the baby can slide under the water. This way I can dry one of the babies calmly, while the other can still splash around in the water for a little while longer, completely safe.”Alba
6. They need to be together
After spending nine months together in their mother's womb, they tend to sleep better if we put them to sleep together, even in the same twin crib, which is large so that they do not bother each other, during the first months (this works very well for identical twins, who shared the same bag in the uterus). Víctor
7. But also separated
"If you have enough space, get two little playpens! They come in great when you have to do something urgent in another room and you can't take the kids with you. The love between siblings can sometimes get really violent."Carol
8. Multiple breastfeeding
"At first I gave them one at a time, without a schedule, when they asked for it. But as soon as I mastered the technique, whenever possible (sometimes one was hungry and the other was not), I breastfed them at the same time with the 'rugby ball posture' that prevents them from kicking each other: the babies breastfeed lying on their back, each one under one of the mother's arms."Susana"We put our twins on the same pillow to breastfeed. So I could hold them at the same time. the two little heads, each one on a nipple, without difficulty.”Ana María
9. Anticipate with the bottle
"I always had the bottles ready before they started crying from hunger and if they both did it at the same time, I would put them in the bouncers and give them one with each hand. When you do it four or five times you take it, a lot of practice and it works perfectly." Carol
10. Solids
It is better to start introducing new foods when the dad can lend a hand, either on a weekend or on vacation.”Susana“At mealtime, the most practical thing is to place the two in the hammocks or high chairs next to each other and the adult in front. And then, it's just a matter of distributing the food to the left, to the right, to the left, to the right..." Ana María
