After confirming that you are pregnant, there are many issues that you will have to learn about and decide regarding the baby's life. For example: you can go little by little organizing your first basket or you can start thinking about what you are going to call it. For the latter, if you are looking for inspiration, you can take a look at some compilations to help you with the baby's name.
Apart from that, another thing that you will have to know, and that usually makes future parents most excited, is knowing if the baby you are expecting will be a boy or a girl. However, while for some it is information that they would like to have from week one, for others it is information that they will not want to know until the baby is born.
If you're in the first group and it's something you're looking forward to, find out when you'll be able to hear the big news.
When can you find out the sex of the baby?
The first thing you should keep in mind is that it is usually not possible to know until you are about four months pregnant. And, normally, if you are looking for something of scientific rigor, you resort to one of the most used techniques to discover it: ultrasound.
It is the best-known method because, as ultrasounds are generally used to see the image of the baby and its anatomy, it will be possible to identify (if it allows it) the sex of the child.
In general and depending on the position of the fetus inside the mother's uterus, it will be from week 20 onwards when you may begin to be able to see the child's genitals and thus know if it is a boy or a girl.
Are there other formulas?
The truth is that yes. In addition to ultrasounds (and other home methods that are part of popular belief) we can use some scientific methods to find out the sex of the baby. Some of them are:
- Amniocentesis. It is a test whose objective is to detect congenital anomalies in the child (for example, Down Syndrome) but that also allows us to know if the baby is a boy or a girl.
- Laplacenta. It is known as the Ramzi method and, taking into account the position of the placenta with respect to the fetus, it can determine the sex of the baby from the first ultrasound.
- The blood test. It consists of extracting a blood sample to analyze the DNA fragments that are from the fetus. From week seven of pregnancy, these fragments will be sufficiently present in the mother's blood to determine whether the future baby is a carrier of the Y (boy) or X (girl) chromosome.
- Chorionic labiapsy. It is an invasive analysis similar to amniocentesis that is done during the third month of pregnancy and is intended to detect genetic disorders. It is carried out by removing and studying a part of the tissue that is surrounding the fetus and placenta. Since this small sample has the same genetic composition as the baby's cells, it can reveal the baby's sex.
