As children get older, more responsibilities are also required of them. At home, for example, we try to keep the room tidy. However, there are dads who tend to reward these gestures.
Given this, a debate arises, what is the reward? Do we give them money? Do we pay them for doing their tasks? Do we not give them anything because it is their obligation?
Different answers appear, however, what children must be taught is to have their own obligations and fulfill them. The fact of carrying them out does not have to be an object of reward, but rather it is something they have to do just as we, for example, go to work.
However, when they grow up we can give them pay, but not in the form of a reward for doing their job, but because we want and want them to learn to manage their expenses – even if these are only the sweets they can buy from time to time.
Tips
- If we want to give pay, it is important to do so only if they complete their tasks.
- On the other hand, it is advisable to adjust this payment to your expenses. Obviously, a 10-year-old child does not have the same expenses as a teenager.
- They must be taught to learn how to manage this pay.
- A fixed amount must be established.
- The amount of money we give them cannot depend on what they demand, as they can become more capricious. The amount will be chosen by the parents and, as we have said, it has to depend on what the parents deem appropriate.
Other reinforcements
It has been shown that children, and not so children, learn much more with positive reinforcement than negative reinforcement or punishment. Therefore, if we want to delegate some tasks to them, such as picking up the toys they use or taking their plate to the kitchen when they finish eating, we must reinforce these actions when they exist.
Likewise, we must also take into account that social reinforcement is much more effective than economic reinforcement.
Furthermore, in terms of demanding tasks from them, we must let them know that the house is for everyone and everyone, therefore, all family members must collaborate in doing these tasks.
As we have mentioned, the reinforcements that work best are doing activities together such as going to the movies as a family, playing sports, or even cooking or doing crafts.
