Toughening Up Children: Does Hardship Build Real Resilience?

Toughening up children is a familiar argument in parenting debates: kids raised in a soft cocoon are said to be too fragile and poorly prepared for the real world. Some people insist we must harden children to teach them about life, defining life as deprivation, injustice, constraints and violence.

But the French psychotherapist Isabelle Filliozat asks a sharp question in her book on children's emotions: we deplore how insensitive this world is, so why would we want to shape our children to match it? Her answer reframes the whole debate around emotional health.

This article explores what she and others say about hardship, emotions and real preparation for life, and adds practical ways to put it into everyday family practice.

Quick takeaways

 • Emotional repression, not emotional expression, is what makes children fragile.
 • Don't add unnecessary hardship to "armor" kids; life already provides trials.
 • Welcome tears, anger and fear fully; how you respond matters more than the event.
 • Prepare without overprotecting: let children face small failures with support nearby.
 • Childhood stress can harm the developing brain, so protect young children from needless pressure.
 • Build resilience in small daily moments of naming and regulating emotions.

Emotional Strength or Emotional Repression?

Filliozat argues that reading emotional expression as weakness is outdated. It is emotional repression, not emotional expression, that makes a person fragile. A child who is allowed to feel and name sadness, anger or fear learns to move through it rather than store it.

She distinguishes between primary emotions that need to be heard and welcomed, and parasitic emotional reactions that need decoding. There are also "just" emotions, the ones that fit the situation and restore our power. Displaced, disproportionate, excessive or substitute emotions, by contrast, leave us more vulnerable.

This matters for parents who worry about raising a child who is too sensitive. The goal is not to remove feeling but to help a child understand it. A useful starting point is noticing how shyness, for instance, is often misread as a flaw rather than a signal, as explored in childhood shyness patterns.

Why We Shouldn't Add Extra Hardship

Trials mark the life of every human being, at every age. So it is pointless to add trials or provoke unnecessary frustration to "armor" children. It is equally unhelpful to avoid every frustration, silence emotions instead of accompanying them, or stop children from moving through pain by repressing their tears.

Denial of emotions and emotional armor give us the illusion of slipping between the raindrops. Yet we now understand how toxic this repression is for physical and psychological health. Emotions are the tools nature gave us to face life's difficulties, so why deprive ourselves of them?

Neuroscience has also shown that stress and hardship in childhood can cause lasting damage to a child's developing brain. That is a strong reason to protect young children from unnecessary pressure, much as we protect their rest and routines, the theme of baby sleep routines. Even before birth, what a baby feels in the womb shows how early sensitivity begins.

Two approaches to preparing children for life

Situation Hardening approach Emotional coaching approach
Child cries after a setback "Stop crying, toughen up" Name the feeling and stay close
Child faces a small failure Add pressure to "prepare" them Let them try, then debrief calmly
Child is afraid of novelty Dismiss the fear Acknowledge fear, then take small steps
Child wants everything Give in to avoid conflict Hold a kind, consistent boundary
Parent feels uncomfortable Push the child harder Regulate yourself first, then respond

Preparing Without Overprotecting

Accompanying children through hard times does not mean doing everything for them or sparing them every upset. To develop healthily, grow and gain maturity, a child needs to face a certain number of failures, struggle against adversity at times and live through painful emotions.

Tal Ben-Shahar warns us to think about the price paid by the child who has known the "luxury" of having everything they want. The skill is calibration: offering help that matches the child's real need rather than rescuing reflexively, an idea echoed in values children learn through everyday modeling.

Practical calibration looks like letting a child carry their own bag, solve a small conflict with a sibling, or sit with disappointment over a cancelled outing, while staying close enough to coach. It also means resisting the urge to over-schedule and over-manage, and instead observing what a child can already handle, a mindset similar to the balance discussed in children and sports.

It's the Response, Not the Event

It is not so much the trial itself that causes trauma, since trials are part of life whether we like it or not. What makes the difference is how emotions are welcomed. Welcoming all the tears of a child after the death of a pet, all the anger after a failure or refusal, and all the fear in the face of novelty and the unknown is what builds emotional health.

This is where a parent's own regulation matters. When we stay calm and curious, a child learns that big feelings are survivable. Modeling this is powerful, and it connects to the way values are transmitted through example, as in everyday family values.

What Welcoming Looks Like

Welcoming is not agreeing with everything. It is naming what you see ("you're really disappointed"), staying present, and waiting before problem-solving. Filliozat's book offers many concrete paths for preparing children for change and accompanying difficult emotions such as sadness, anger, fear and frustration.

Building Emotional Health Day by Day

Emotional health is built in small, repeated moments rather than grand lessons. A child who is regularly helped to identify a feeling, breathe through it and recover learns that emotions are information, not emergencies. Over time this becomes genuine resilience, the capacity to bend and return rather than to harden and crack.

Parents can build this into ordinary routines: a short check-in at dinner, a calm corner with books, a habit of naming feelings in stories. These small practices also support connection during transitions, much like the preparation that helps families travel calmly, as in traveling with babies.

It also helps to remember that every child's temperament differs. Some children feel things intensely and need more co-regulation, not more pressure. Understanding individual differences, including how children respond to stress and novelty, is part of the same respectful approach explored in parenting an autistic child.

When the World Feels Harsh

Many parents worry that a gentle approach leaves children unprepared for a harsh society. But preparation is not imitation. We can teach a child to be kind without being naive, to set boundaries without aggression, and to recognize injustice without becoming cold.

That is the heart of Filliozat's question: if we deplore the world's insensitivity, we should not conform our children to it. Instead we can raise people who bring more sensitivity into it. This is a long game, and it asks parents to tolerate their own discomfort when a child struggles.

Community and shared experience help. Seeing how other families handle challenges, whether through play, culture or shared rituals, reminds us we are not alone, an idea reflected in family name mix-ups and the everyday chaos of family life. Understanding how reading and guiding a child's development can also steady parents through these moments.

My hands-on take

In my own home, the hardest shift was learning to sit with my child's disappointment instead of rushing to fix it. Early on, I would offer solutions within seconds, and my child would escalate. When I started simply saying, "that sounds really frustrating," and waiting, something changed. The storm still came, but it passed faster, and we both recovered.

I also had to notice my own urge to "toughen up" my kids when I felt judged by other adults. That pressure was usually about me, not them. Now I try to ask what my child actually needs in the moment: a boundary, a hug, or just quiet company. It is not perfect, but it feels more honest, and the kids seem to trust that their feelings have a place at home.

Frequently asked questions

Does emotional coaching make children too soft?

No. Welcoming emotions teaches children to understand and regulate them, which builds genuine resilience. Repression tends to make people more fragile, not stronger.

Should parents never let children feel frustration?

Children do need to face some failures and painful emotions to mature. The point is not to avoid all frustration, but to avoid adding unnecessary hardship and to accompany feelings when they arise.

What if my child is very sensitive?

Sensitivity is not a flaw to fix. Children who feel intensely often need more co-regulation and patience, not more pressure to toughen up.

How do I start?

Begin by naming feelings out loud and staying calm during big emotions. Small daily moments of connection matter more than perfect responses.
