Recently the menstrual cup has raised controversy due to the large number of detractors and defenders it has. However, it is best to have information so that women can decide which method is most appropriate for us or the one we want to use, based on our experience with different methods such as tampons, pads or menstrual cups and the information we have.
What it is and how to use it
It is a container made of hypoallergenic silicone, a material that is widely used in medicine. Its shape is that of a cup and is used to collect the flow of blood that is discarded during menstruation.
Its use is simple:
- First, you have to choose the cup that best suits the woman, due to its size, the amount of blood it can collect, etc. since some women have heavier periods than others.
- Then it is introduced into the vagina. There is no need to go to the gynecologist, we can do it ourselves. Once we have it on, we forget about it, until the night, when we have to empty it.
- Finally, once empty, we wash it with water and reinsert it.
- When we finish having our period, it is sterilized, stored in its container and until next time!
The pros
The duration
The life of a menstrual cup, depending on its quality and other factors, is very long: up to 15 years. A tampon or pad is disposable and has one use only.
The economy
The price of the menstrual cup varies depending on the manufacturer, but it usually does not cost more than 30 euros. However, tampons and pads are much more expensive, if we count how many we use over a year.
Hygiene
As the cup remains inside the vagina, the menstrual flow does not reach the outside so we can forget about staining our panties, pants, etc. Furthermore, by staying indoors, there is no possibility of infections.
wear it
We can wear it for about 12 hours, more or less a whole day and change it at night if we have chosen the one that suits our flow. However, with other products we have to change them more often.
The vaginal flora
It maintains the vaginal flora at its correct levels since it does not contain added products like other methods that use bleaches, among others. Being made with hypoallergenic material, it perfectly takes care of the PH of the vagina.
The cons
You need privacy
If you are at home, there is no problem in emptying it, however, the problem comes when you are away. Once we remove it and empty the blood into the toilet, it must be washed or at least rinsed with some water.
Obviously in a public bathroom we will not normally have the sink next to the toilet, so we will have to go out with it wrapped in paper, rinse it, enter the bathroom and put it back on. It is normal for us to feel embarrassed about washing it in a public place.
If you don't know your body, it's complicated
To put it on you need to insert a few fingers into the vagina to insert it folded and then open it on its own. If you have never had contact with your genitals, it is more difficult to find the correct way to place it.
take it off
As it is a container that is inserted into the lavatory, it creates an empty effect. If we do not 'break' that void before removing it, we can do some damage when extracting it. To do this, it is best to use your fingers and vaginal muscles to remove the menstrual cup.
The taboos
Obviously, periods are not a shameful process. It is something natural that all women have - it is advisable to visit the gynecologist if this is not the case. However, it is an intimate process and many girls still feel 'ashamed' of menstruation or do not like their own blood. To do this, it is best to know yourself and not feel any type of qualms towards your own body and towards natural and totally normal biological processes.
The experience
Once you know the pros and cons that this container may have for your menstrual flow, it is best to try it and, from there, decide what you like the most and what works best for you.
Experience, without a doubt, is what can best guide us when choosing - as far as possible - about our menstruation.
