Psychological violence against children describes repeated behaviours by a parent or another adult in charge of a child, or a single extreme incident, that make the child understand they are worthless, abnormal, unloved, unwanted, in danger, or valued only for satisfying other people's desires.

It damages the fundamental needs for self-esteem, love, belonging, safety and physiological balance, and it affects children who witness it as well as those who experience it directly.

This violence can happen by commission, when an adult does something harmful, or by omission, when an adult fails to do something good for the child. Teachers, sports coaches, relatives, siblings and classmates can all be responsible.

Quick takeaways

  • Psychological violence can be active (commission) or passive (omission)
  • Five main forms: rejection, terror, isolation, corruption and refusal of affection
  • Neglect of health, physiological needs or education counts as violence
  • Conditional love teaches a child they are valued only for performance
  • It is at the root of all other violence against children
  • Witnesses are affected as well as direct victims

Rejection, terror and isolation

Rejection appears through verbal or non-verbal signals that deliberately belittle a child, devaluing both their personality and their actions. It includes shaming a child, ridiculing normal emotions such as anger, tears, sadness or fear, making a scapegoat of them, criticising, punishing, isolating and humiliating them publicly. Even ordinary moments of family life can become a stage for this pattern, as when children's crafts are mocked instead of praised.

Terrorising a child means threatening them, blackmailing them or behaving in ways that suggest they could be hurt, abandoned or placed in dangerous situations. The threats may hang over the child directly or over people, animals and objects they love. It can involve setting difficult or unrealistic goals with the threat of losing what they love, creating unpredictable or chaotic contexts, exploiting fears by threatening isolation or abandonment, or forcing the child to keep a secret.

Isolating a child means preventing them from meeting their needs for interaction and communication, inside or outside the home. It can take the form of abusive limits on freedom of movement, tight control over friendships, bans on going out to play, confinement at home, or refusing to let a child invite friends or accept invitations. Loneliness of this kind often sits alongside other worries, which is why inherited fears deserve attention too, and why gentle shared moments such as stories about the sea can help a child feel less alone.

Corruption, exploitation and refusal of affection

Corrupting a child means encouraging inappropriate, self-destructive, antisocial, criminal or deviant conduct. This covers practices condemned by law, such as prostitution, drug dealing, incitement to violence or pornography, but also common practices that fall outside the law: role reversal where the child cares for the parent, infantilisation that stops a child growing and becoming autonomous, imposed restrictions on learning for religious reasons, and hyperstimulation with a search for performance and success at any cost, including the cost of suffering. Even everyday habits deserve scrutiny, such as how to handle hiccups in babies without turning care into a performance.

Refusing emotional responses means dismissing a baby's or child's attempts to interact through a lack, voluntary or not, of affection, proof of love, encouragement, empathy and attentive presence. Conditional love belongs here: a child loved for good grades or good behaviour never feels loved as they are. The signs include minimising or denying emotions, detachment, lack of involvement, medical or educational neglect, and speeches that justify the non-response, such as claims that babies must be left to cry. Parents seeking support can also check the kindergarten check scholarship answers to find practical help.

This type of violence is widespread and sits at the root of all violence against children, including physical and sexual aggression. There is a continuum: it begins with violence considered harmless and escalates when the aggressor lacks a firmly rooted sense of prohibition.

Warning signs of psychological violence
Form What it looks like What the child may show
Rejection Shaming, ridicule, public humiliation Low self-esteem, withdrawal
Terror Threats, blackmail, unpredictable contexts Anxiety, hypervigilance
Isolation Bans on friends, confinement at home Loneliness, secrecy
Corruption Role reversal, forced performance Parentified or exhausted behaviour
Refusal of affection Denied comfort, conditional love Difficulty trusting adults

Recognising the signs and acting early

Because psychological violence often hides in ordinary gestures, it helps to watch for patterns rather than isolated moments. A child who is regularly shamed, threatened, kept away from friends or denied comfort is receiving a message about their worth, and that message accumulates over time. The same is true of a child who is pushed to perform beyond their age or made responsible for an adult's wellbeing.

Adults around the child can make a difference by naming what they notice, listening without judgement and offering steady emotional presence. If you are rethinking your own reactions, learning about conscious parenting can give you concrete alternatives to threats and shaming. Everyday routines also matter: a calm bedtime and a predictable rhythm support a child's sense of safety, and understanding the nap helps you avoid turning tiredness into conflict. Remembering to never be ashamed of a parent's imperfections can also help adults model self-compassion.

When a child seems withdrawn, anxious or unusually compliant, take it seriously rather than dismissing it as a phase. A steady adult who responds warmly, keeps promises and does not use love as a reward is already countering part of the harm.

Protecting children outside the home

Psychological violence is not limited to parents. Teachers, sports coaches, activity leaders, relatives, siblings and classmates can all inflict it, and online harassment extends the reach of peers well beyond school hours. A child facing rejection or humiliation in one setting may carry the effects into every other part of life, so it is worth asking how things are going in each place where they spend time.

Isolation is often the first warning sign: a child who stops mentioning friends, avoids activities they used to enjoy or seems afraid of a particular adult needs gentle, open questions rather than interrogation. Keeping communication easy in ordinary times makes it more likely a child will speak up when something is wrong. Shared moments help here, whether that means watching family movies together or simply talking while preparing a meal.

If you suspect abuse by another adult, document what you observe and seek guidance from a professional rather than confronting the situation alone. Protecting a child sometimes means accepting that your role is to listen and to escalate, not to resolve everything yourself.

My hands-on take

I have caught myself using some of these patterns without meaning to. The one that stung was the throwaway line about crying being "nothing" — I said it to end an awkward moment, not to hurt anyone, but I saw my child stop mid-sob and go quiet. That silence taught me more than any list of categories.

Since then I have tried a simple habit: when emotions run high, I name what I see before I say anything else. It sounds small, and it is, but it shifts the tone of the whole evening. I also pay attention to the moments I am tempted to threaten or withdraw affection, because those are usually the moments I am the one who is tired or overwhelmed.

Frequently asked questions

Is psychological violence always intentional?

No. It can happen by omission, when an adult fails to provide something a child needs, and some harmful patterns are passed on without awareness. What matters is the repeated effect on the child, not only the intent.

Can a child be affected by violence they only witness?

Yes. Witnessing psychological violence harms a child's sense of safety and belonging just as direct victimisation does. The need for security is damaged either way.

Why is conditional love considered a form of violence?

When affection depends on grades or good behaviour, a child learns they are not loved as they are. This undermines self-esteem and the sense of being valued unconditionally.

Where does psychological violence start?

It often begins with behaviours considered harmless and escalates when limits are not firmly set. Recognising early signs is the best way to interrupt that progression.
