Iodine is a mineral that we need in very small quantities, however, its deficiency can cause various health problems. This occurs because our thyroid uses it to manufacture thyroid hormones, responsible for many essential functions for our body to function correctly.
During pregnancy, a woman has to produce more amounts of thyroid hormone, and therefore iodine needs increase. Lack of iodine during pregnancy can cause thyroid diseases and the development of the child's brain.
In fact, a study in which researchers from the University of Granada participated revealed that children whose mothers were detected with iodine deficiencies during pregnancy have, at eight years of age, an IQ three points lower than the rest, and a worse reading ability at nine years of age. To reach these conclusions, scientists analyzed iodine in urine samples from more than a thousand pregnant women and, years later, evaluated the cognitive abilities of their children. A study that allowed us to reach significant answers about the importance of iodine in pregnancy and the consequences of suffering from deficiencies of this mineral.
I am pregnant, when should I start taking iodine?
Your doctor will most likely prescribe an iodine supplement from the first moment, and even three months before trying to get pregnant, if you go for a prior consultation. Normally these supplements also contain other essential components such as folic acid. In one of its latest publications, the British Dietetic Association recommends a daily intake of iodine during pregnancy and breastfeeding of 250 micrograms per day, while for the rest of adults 150 would be enough. However, we once again emphasize the need for the doctor to recommend and prescribe the correct regimen for the administration of this mineral and not resort to taking it on our own.
In addition, experts also advise obtaining iodine from natural foods. The main source is iodized salt, but excess salt is not recommended for pregnant women, and it is better to consume iodine through fish and dairy products. Seafood is also a source of iodine, but it is not recommended during pregnancy due to the levels of cadmium it stores. Going to a nutritionist to explain which foods are rich in iodine and which are the most and least suitable for a pregnant woman's diet is essential to try to achieve adequate intake through food without taking risks and choosing the healthiest options. In addition, during this visit we can also clarify any nutritional doubts we may have about what we can and cannot take during pregnancy. In any case, it's not about worrying either: until a few years ago, iodine supplements didn't even exist.
