Emotional Transformation for Adults: Speaking the Language of Feelings

Emotional transformation for adults begins with a simple but demanding idea: learning to understand and speak the language of emotions instead of fearing it. The psychologist Claude Steiner, a specialist in Transactional Analysis, described emotional literacy as a learnable skill built on three abilities: understanding your own emotions, listening with empathy to other people's emotions, and expressing feelings in a productive way.

Emotions are bodily states rooted in our biochemistry that shape our behaviour. Becoming literate in them does not mean controlling them but no longer being afraid of them, whether they are ours or someone else's. The reward is real: recovered energy, personal power and a renewed joy in living.

Quick takeaways

 • Emotional literacy rests on three abilities: understanding, empathising and expressing.
 • Opening the heart means giving, asking for, accepting, refusing and self-giving strokes.
 • Always ask permission before offering a sign of recognition.
 • The action/feeling statement ("When you..., I feel...") builds honest communication.
 • Intuition deserves to be named and validated, not dismissed.
 • Productive expression avoids blame, threats and bargaining.

What Emotional Literacy Actually Means

Steiner treats emotions as physical events, not abstract moods. They rise in the body, affect how we act, and colour how we see the people around us. Emotional literacy is therefore a practical know-how rather than a personality trait: you can learn it, practise it and improve it at any age.

He also places love at the centre of the whole process, defining it as the master emotion that draws people to be together, play together and even work together. For him, overcoming our emotional barriers starts and ends with the heart, with expressing the love that already lives in us. Few things are as exciting as rediscovering or refining your emotional identity.

This matters for parents in particular, because children read our emotional state long before they understand our words. If you want to happy childhood, your own emotional education is part of the groundwork. The three steps below follow Steiner's original order, from opening the heart to expressing what we feel.

Step One: Open Your Heart

The heart is the symbolic seat of our emotions. We feel good there when we are happy, in love or joyful, and we feel bad there when we are sad, angry or heartbroken. Opening the heart means freeing the centre of our feelings from the restrictive influences that stop us from showing affection to one another.

In practice, this happens through strokes, the signs of recognition we all need. They can be physical, such as a hug, a caress, a pat on the back, a kiss or holding hands, or verbal, such as compliments, congratulations and positive remarks. Steiner lists five moves: giving strokes, asking for them, accepting them, refusing them, and giving them to yourself.

Ask Permission First

This step is harder than it looks because of what Steiner calls the stroke economy, a set of internal rules imposed by the critical voice in our heads that blocks positive exchanges. That is why he recommends asking permission before offering a genuine sign of recognition, and accepting that the moment may not suit the other person. Simple openers work well: "Can I tell you something I like about you?" or "I wanted to apologise for what I said earlier."

The five stroke moves and how to use them

Move What it looks like Why it matters
Give A hug, compliment or thank-you Builds connection without power games
Ask "Can you tell me what you appreciated?" Teaches others how to support you
Accept Receiving praise without deflecting Breaks the critical inner voice
Refuse Declining a stroke that feels wrong Protects your boundaries
Self-give Naming your own progress Reduces dependence on outside approval

Step Two: Survey Your Emotional Landscape

Once the heart is open, you can look around and observe the emotional terrain you live in. This means listening with an open heart and trying to understand emotions, both yours and other people's: knowing exactly what you feel, how strongly, and why. Over time you start noticing the ebb and flow of your emotions rather than being swept away by them.

Steiner insists that we can trigger emotions in another person, and they in us. That is why the action/feeling statement matters so much, and it echoes the learn together spirit of honest exchange: "When you [action], I feel [emotion]." The format is simple but it teaches you what people feel, how intensely, and how those feelings connect to someone else's behaviour. The goal is to hear and understand without becoming defensive or taking other people's reactions personally, much like the curious parenting approach of observing before judging.

This is also where intuition enters. Steiner gives intuition a large place in the process, encouraging us to reveal our intuitive hunches and to validate them rather than dismiss them. Naming a hunch out loud, gently and without claiming certainty, often opens a conversation that facts alone would never start.

Step Three: Express Emotions Productively

The final step turns understanding into expression. Productive expression means saying what you feel in a way that builds the relationship rather than damaging it, without chantage, guilt-tripping, threats, bargaining or criticism. It also means accepting that emotions sometimes arrive as violent storms, in us and in others, and that this is normal rather than a failure.

Children benefit enormously from watching an adult do this well. When a parent names a feeling calmly, a child learns that emotions are speakable, which is a protective skill in its own right. It also helps to remember that adult stress spills over: if you have manage stress badly, your children feel it before you say a word.

Two habits support this step. First, separate the observation from the interpretation: describe what happened, then name the feeling. Second, offer strokes freely once permission is given, because gratitude expressed out loud is one of the simplest forms of emotional expression there is. Storytelling can help too, and cooking with characters gives children a playful way to talk about feelings.

Practising the Language Day by Day

Emotional literacy is not a one-off exercise; it is a vocabulary you build through repetition. Small daily rituals help: naming one feeling at dinner, thanking someone for something specific, or asking a partner how they felt about a moment in the day. These tiny exchanges gradually replace the critical inner voice with a more generous one.

The same patience applies to children's emotions, which are often louder and less filtered than ours. A calm adult who can say "I see you are frustrated" teaches more than any lecture. If you are looking for baby care guidance, remember that emotional responsiveness is part of care too, not a separate skill. It also helps to notice normalized aggression that adults often overlook.

Finally, be patient with yourself. The stroke economy took years to install and will not disappear in a week. Each honest sentence is a small deposit in a healthier emotional account, for you and for the people who live with you.

My hands-on take

I started trying the permission question almost by accident, after reading about strokes and realising how often I dumped compliments on people at the worst possible moment. The first time I asked my partner whether I could tell him something I appreciated, he looked confused, then laughed, then listened properly. It felt slower than just saying it, but the conversation actually landed.

The action/feeling statement was harder. My first attempts sounded like accusations with a feeling bolted on, and I had to practise stripping out the "you always" part. What helped was writing one sentence down before saying it out loud. It is still not natural, but it has cut down a surprising number of arguments in our house, and my children have started copying the format when they are upset, which was not something I expected.

Frequently asked questions

What is emotional literacy in simple terms?

It is the ability to understand your own emotions, empathise with other people's, and express feelings in a way that helps rather than harms. It is a learned skill, not a fixed trait.

Sponsored

Why ask permission before giving a compliment?

Because the other person should have a real choice about whether to receive it now. Asking also protects you from assuming the moment is right when it is not.

What is the action/feeling statement?

It is a simple sentence linking someone's behaviour to your emotion: "When you do X, I feel Y." It helps both people understand what is happening without blame.

Can this help with children?

Yes. Children learn emotional vocabulary by watching adults name feelings calmly. It supports the everyday work of raising a happy child.
