Teaching oral language to babies the way we teach reading to schoolchildren would probably fail completely, and that failure is worth thinking about.

That is the question John Holt, a teacher turned education researcher and a well-known advocate of self-directed learning, explored in a chapter of his book How Children Learn. He argued that if we set out to teach children to talk the way schools teach reading, they would never learn anything at all.

Quick takeaways

  • Holt argued that teaching speech like reading would leave most children confused and silent.
  • Children grasp the purpose of communication before they learn individual words.
  • Tone of voice and context give babies a general sense of meaning long before vocabulary.
  • Grammar is absorbed roughly first, then words are fitted into it.
  • Talk to babies as real people, not as a teacher delivering a lesson.
  • Let children listen in on genuine adult conversation whenever possible.

How Would Well-Meaning Teachers Teach Babies to Talk?

Holt invites us to imagine a committee of experts taking charge of speech. They would analyse language, cut it into a list of "language skills", and decide that since language is made of sounds, children must first produce every sound of their language before learning to speak it.

The sounds would be listed from easiest and most common to hardest and rarest, then played to babies starting at the top of the list. To avoid confusing the child, they might be kept away from ordinary chatter and exposed only to the target sounds. Beside the sound list would sit a list of syllables, then a list of words.

A Fully Planned Curriculum

Once every sound was mastered, children would learn to combine sounds into syllables, then syllables into words in list order, alongside grammar rules for building sentences. Everything would be planned, with no room for chance, plus plenty of exercises, revision and oral tests to make sure nothing was forgotten.

The Reading Parallel: Discouragement and Silence

Holt saw the consequences as just as disastrous as the approach that leads many children to reject reading or to read poorly. Faced with this programme, most children would quickly feel bewildered, discouraged, humiliated and frightened, and would simply stop trying to follow instructions.

Children living a normal life outside the classroom would probably ignore the teaching altogether and learn to speak on their own. But if adult control over their lives were complete, they would take refuge in deliberate failure and silence, much as many do when someone tries to Waldorf teaching methods style lessons on them. The same instinct shapes how we plan natural family travel and pack for it.

It is a sobering comparison for anyone who has watched a bright child shut down over a reading worksheet. The instinct to break a whole skill into drills and tests can quietly drain the joy out of the very thing we want to share, whether that is a first spoken word or a first story read aloud.

How Language Actually Comes to Babies

According to Holt, young children learn words last. He regretted that adults assume that because words are the smallest, simplest elements of language, humans must learn them first. In his view, children first grasp the overall idea of communicating through language: that all those sounds coming out of people's mouths carry meaning.

Next, from tone of voice and context, they catch a very general sense of what people are saying, much as you can tell in a country whose language you do not speak whether a parent is scolding a child, people are joking or arguing, or someone is explaining or giving an order. Only then do they begin to perceive the rough grammar of the language, its structure.

Finally, and only then, they start learning words and slotting them into the right places according to the very rough grammar model they have built. This is a useful lens for baby care tips and for anyone wondering why a toddler understands far more than they can say. The same principle explains why the best toys support language through play rather than word drills.

Drop the Teaching Intentions and Just Interact

Holt offers a few recommendations. Adults should talk to babies and children as real people, not as teachers trying to teach speech. Babies and children first need to realise what language is for.

If speech is dishonest, with no genuine feeling behind it, they will not see it as something they can or want to use themselves, and they will learn little from those exchanges. When we fixate on making children "learn" something, it becomes very hard to have authentic, alive conversations that belong to normal relationships rather than to spontaneous "teaching" talk.

Holt also stressed that babies and young children love hearing adult conversation and will often sit quietly for a long time simply listening. To help a little one learning to talk, we can speak to them naturally, without a teaching goal, and let them stay near us while we talk with other people. The same relaxed spirit helps with sibling jealousy and other everyday family moments, where children learn most from watching how we genuinely relate to one another. The same is true of pretend play toys and of the role children play at family gatherings, where natural interaction teaches far more than instruction.

What This Means for Everyday Family Life

The practical upshot is not a method but a posture: narrate your day, answer babbles as if they were remarks, and let your child sit in on real conversations. A child who hears language used for real purposes, to comfort, explain, joke and negotiate, has the richest possible material to work from.

This fits naturally with other hands-on parenting moments, from baby hiccups to the ordinary routines of feeding and bedtime, where talk is woven into care rather than delivered as a lesson. Toys and play matter too: pretend play and simple games give children reasons to speak, ask and negotiate, which is exactly the kind of authentic exchange Holt valued.

My hands-on take

When my own child was small, I caught myself turning talk into a quiz: pointing at things and waiting for the right word. It felt productive, but the conversation died every time. What changed things was simply narrating what I was doing and letting my child sit nearby while I chatted with other adults.

The words came when they were ready, and far more of them came from overheard conversation than from anything I deliberately taught. Now I try to notice when I slip into teacher mode and gently step back into just talking.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean I should never correct my child's speech?

Not at all. Holt's point is about the overall posture, not about banning all feedback. Natural recasting, where you repeat their idea correctly in conversation, fits far better than drilling.

Why do children learn words last?

Because words only make sense once a child has grasped that sounds carry meaning and has a rough sense of how sentences work. Vocabulary then slots into that framework.

Can babies really understand adult conversation?

They pick up tone, rhythm and context long before individual words. That is why hearing real conversation around them is so valuable.

Is this approach only for stay-at-home parents?

No. It is about how you talk during ordinary care, meals and play, which any caregiver can do.
