Oh, but you do that too?
It is a question that I hear too often, more than I would like, and despite being a profession as old as the history of Humanity and having our competencies well defined, a large part of the population is unaware of everything that a midwife can offer.
I would like that when you finish reading this post, you have a clear idea of what we midwives do, when and why to seek our services, and you know where to find us. I would love for you to start looking for your trusted midwife and find the professional you need when you finish reading this article.
There is no doubt that our history as a profession is linked to the lives of women and their vital processes. We care for and accompany women throughout their sexual and reproductive lives, from the first period to menopause, although everyone usually relates us mainly to pregnancy and childbirth.
And yes, it is true that a fundamental part of our work focuses on pregnancy and childbirth, but as professionals we have much more to offer, and that is what I hope to explain to you in this post.
Midwives are health professionals who, after 6 years of university studies, are trained to care for women throughout their life cycle, and despite being a reference professional in sexual and reproductive health, both the system and the women themselves underuse us, in part because our role is unknown.
When to look for a midwife?
Throughout life, a woman experiences multiple vital changes, and we midwives are precisely there accompanying so that the adaptation and experience of these changes is as healthy and physiological as possible.
During adolescence we promote healthy sexual and reproductive education, knowledge of the sexual organs and the menstrual cycle, we inform about how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases and avoid unwanted pregnancies, and we provide advice on different contraceptive methods.
All this can be done individually in the consultation or in a group, many midwives go to schools to talk about sexuality, contraceptive methods...
Being a close professional, it is easier for women to open up to explain what is happening to them in a topic as intimate as their sexuality, and this becomes even more evident when we talk about adolescents, therefore, our role during this vital stage is very interesting.
Despite being a little-known facet of our work, when you are looking for pregnancy, we are at your side, providing you with emotional support and information about healthy lifestyle habits, fertile days, nutrition, exercise, activities to reduce stress... all of this focused on optimizing your state of health and improving the chances of pregnancy, whether you are looking for it naturally or if you are undergoing some type of fertility treatment.
But if there is a vital moment in which midwives are present in a woman's life, it is pregnancy.
In a pregnancy consultation we ask the woman how she is feeling, we assess her general condition, we observe the shape of the belly and its growth, we touch her to see how the baby is located inside and we listen to her heartbeat.
We also provide information and advice, listen to your concerns, accompany you and support you emotionally, and offer you resources to live your pregnancy in a healthy and full way. If the woman has any discomfort, we explain the reasons why it has appeared and offer solutions to make her feel better.
The activities of the motherhood preparation group offer the possibility of sharing experiences with other women who are experiencing the same situation as you. Group work creates a space to express, get excited, share and work on the relationship with the couple and the bond with the baby. It is a way to make it easier for couples to get into the pregnancy story and feel an active part of it.
In the childbirth preparation groups we offer information about the physiology of childbirth, hormones involved, resources to relieve pain, movement, postures, we talk about the first hours of a baby's life and its importance, the baby's first care, breastfeeding, carrying, parenting...
As you can see, the role of the midwife during pregnancy is irreplaceable; no other professional will offer you comprehensive care like us. Do not do without our services, we have a lot to offer you, regardless of whether your pregnancy is low or high risk, whether you follow your pregnancy through public or private healthcare. Put a midwife in your life!
Another key vital moment in women's lives, in which midwives are there, is labor/birth. I like to talk about labor and birth since this takes into account the two protagonists of the story, since women give birth and babies are born.
During childbirth, midwives are the professionals who accompany you throughout the entire process, offering you physical, psychological and emotional support, whether you decide to give birth at home or in the hospital.
We know the physiology of the process and we offer you natural methods to relieve the pain of contractions, such as massage, local heat, movement, a hot water bath, breathing...
We attend the birth if it is normal and we are trained to detect any alteration that may appear during the process, in which case we take the necessary measures to resolve the situation, transporting you to the hospital if you are at home or notifying the gynecologist on duty if you are already in the hospital.
As professionals, we must respect women's decisions and accompany them during childbirth with respect and trust, taking care of their well-being and monitoring the well-being of their baby, encouraging childbirth to happen in an environment of intimacy, security and trust, taking maximum care of the environment to facilitate the birth.
Once childbirth is over, a new stage begins for the woman, the puerperium, and without a doubt midwives are a reference professional during this period that begins immediately after birth.
During the first hours of life and still in the delivery room, we encourage mother-child skin-to-skin contact, the beginning of breastfeeding on the right foot.
The first days of life and returning home are key moments in which we midwives cannot miss, this is a particularly sensitive period and the woman needs our support. Being able to monitor the postpartum, support the woman in her decisions and her type of parenting, take care of breastfeeding, monitor the evolution of the baby and the mother, provide emotional support and actively listen to how the woman feels, resolve doubts, promote the mother-child bond, promote healthy habits, advise on the care of the baby and one's own care... all this and much more is what we midwives offer you during the postpartum.
Outside of the maternal period, midwives accompany you throughout adulthood by providing gynecological care for healthy women, we advise on family planning and contraceptives, we participate in cervical and breast cancer prevention programs, we promote healthy habits, we promote self-knowledge of the body, the sexual organs and the menstrual cycle, we assess the pelvic floor in the different vital stages of the woman and we recommend specific care according to each case and we refer to other professionals (physiotherapists, gynecologists) when we cannot solve a problem.
During menopause, we help women adapt to the physiological changes that occur in their body and provide them with resources to take care of themselves and feel better.
As you can see, whatever life stage you are in, having a midwife nearby will be very beneficial, so don't hesitate and put a midwife in your life.
Where can I find my midwife?
The majority of midwives work in public health; it is common to find them in hospital delivery rooms and consultations at primary health centers.
But, we are not only in public health, more and more midwives dare to take the step and start working privately and independently in our own companies.
At the moment we are few, but little by little women are finding us and greatly value the personalized and continuous care that we offer, since we are addressing needs that are not usually covered by public healthcare.
In summary, midwives carry out our functions in the hospital, in the consultation, in our centers, we go to homes, civic centers, associations, private centers..., offering our care individually and working with groups.
I hope that with all this information you value the benefits of having a trusted midwife in your life and that you start looking for one.
