When the birth is by caesarean section, the usual discomforts of postpartum delivery (injury, vaginal leaks, sensitivity in the breasts, hormonal changes and fatigue) are joined by the symptoms of an abdominal surgical intervention: pain in the incision (one external in the abdomen and another internal in the uterus), accumulation of gases and constipation.
The area of the wound will hurt especially when you stand up, sneeze, cough... It is advisable to hold the area firmly when you are going to make any movement and take the painkillers prescribed by the doctor. There is no need to fear harming the baby from painkillers in breast milk - the vast majority of them will not affect the baby at all.
Scar care
Wound care does not require more than a daily shower.
- It is advisable to dry it carefully with a sterile gauze (patting, without dragging) and leaving it in the air for a few minutes.
- It is advisable not to cover with dressings, but be careful with clothing rubbing.
- Do not apply iodinated disinfectants to the wound as there is a risk that they will reach the baby through breastfeeding and fix the staples to the skin, potentially causing complications when removing them.
- The skin heals quickly and after 7 or 10 days the staples will be removed. You can go to your midwife to do it and she will take the opportunity to carry out the postpartum check-up and answer all your questions.
- Once the staples are removed, you can massage the scar with rosehip oil or a specific cream. This improves circulation in the area, promoting proper healing of the muscle layers and helping to conceal the scar. The movement of the fingers should simulate the action of peeling off adhesive paper from the skin, as if giving small pinches.
- Keep in mind that the scar is not just what you see, so it is common that in the first months you notice tightness, itching, a different sensitivity, as if asleep, hardened areas and even discomfort with changes in weather.
- Girdles are not recommended unless you are overweight and the scar area is within a fold, then you can use a pregnancy girdle to facilitate support of the abdomen and avoid excess tension on the wound. When you change the diaper or dress the baby, place him on a high changing table so that you do not have to bend over the abdomen, and if you ever need to bend over, remember to do so by bending your knees and keeping your back straight.
