The bunk beds There are not many statistics in Europe on the number of people injured by falling or getting trapped in a gap in the bunk beds. We found a very old one (from the 90s) from the UK where a group of 18 hospitals reported over 400 accidents involving bunk beds. Although it has been a long time, you have to be careful.
Precautions
- First of all: it must be assembled well, without leaving any gap in which the child could get trapped.
- A good idea is to place the bunk bed in a corner. Thus, it is between two walls, it is better supported and two of the four sides from which the child could fall are closed.
- The safety rail must be firmly attached to the bed. The European standard published by AENOR specifies that the upper bed must have four safety barriers. Without the help of tools, they will not be able to be removed.
- The distance between the top edge of the safety barriers and the top of the bed base must be 260 mm
- It doesn't hurt to check the firmness of the railing from time to time and remember that it should always be raised. The distance between the bars will not be greater than 70 mm.
- The ladder to access the upper bunk must also be completely safe and perfectly secured. The free space between two steps will be at least 30 mm and the useful width of the step will be at least 300 mm.
- The mattress or base of the upper bunk bed is made of wooden boards and these are in good condition. The bars or slats should go directly under the mattress and be securely fastened at both ends. A mattress that rests solely on the bunk frame or loose supports could collapse onto the bunk below.
Good ideas
- A good idea is to put a light on the railing and leave it on at night. This way, if the child has to get off to go to the bathroom, he or she will not be at risk.
- We must ensure that children do not use chairs or other objects to climb onto the top bed.
- If we place a rug or something soft under the bunk bed, we will cushion a possible fall.
And remember that...
- Children under six years old should not sleep on a top bunk bed.
- If we convert the bunk beds into two single beds, we must check that no nails, screws, etc. are loose.
- Children should not play on the top bed. If necessary, we will remove the ladder during the day to prevent them from being tempted to climb.
