During the first months of life, the baby needs, above all, stimuli for its five senses: touch, hearing, sight, smell and even taste. There are many stimulation games that parents can do with our child at this stage. Of course, if we see that our little one gets tired or cries, it is better to leave it for another time.
Games for the baby: in mom's arms
The baby's main toy is its parents and in the first months and whenever possible, especially its mother. Being in the arms of mom and dad, listening to their voice, recognizing their smell, receiving their cuddles and cuddles... are stimulation games that awaken the baby's curiosity about the world.
Don't be afraid to hold your baby too long: it's never enough. Rocking him gently, caressing him, breast-feeding him, offering him your finger to hold with his little hand are some of the activities that stimulate the baby's tactile sensations.
Singing softly, laughing close to him, talking to him and telling him what is around him or what you are going to do next serves to develop the hearing and intelligence of the newborn and helps parents strengthen the bond with him.
Smile at him and make funny gestures while you hold him in your arms, with your face close to his, about 25 or 30 centimeters away: this is the distance at which they can see best until they are three months old, since before that they do not focus their eyes.
in the crib
In the first months of life, babies spend many hours in the crib. Most newborns spend between 16 and 17 hours a day sleeping, and little by little they increase their time awake.
Crib mobiles entertain them and provide visual and auditory stimuli. Soft dolls and stuffed animals stimulate their sense of touch, as do crib gyms, which make sounds when the baby kicks them and help them begin to discover cause-and-effect relationships.
Change his crib toys from time to time, so that he continues to discover new stimuli. Until three or four months, children are not able to focus on objects, but they do perceive movement, shapes and colors.
Lying face down
The appropriate position for the baby to sleep is face up, since this position has been shown to prevent sudden infant death. However, babies need to change their posture daily to prevent deformations of their head and improve their muscle tone.
That's why it's so important to place your baby face down several times a day. It helps them achieve good extension of the spine and is the essential preliminary phase so that they can later roll over or crawl. From four or six months onwards, our little one will have enough strength to hold a small rattle or a toy. Put your baby on his tummy, with colorful toys and objects that make sounds that get his attention. He will notice them and try to catch them.
Lie down with him on the floor or in bed, within his sight and at his height, and cuddle and caress him. Peek-a-boo, showing him a toy and covering it with a cloth or a cushion and showing it again, rolling a sound toy so that he can follow it with his eyes or moving a rattle near his head so that he can turn it in that direction are other activities that you can do with him on the floor from a very young age and that will awaken his curiosity.
in the bathroom
Bathing is a fantastic ritual before sleep, as it relaxes and entertains them. Feeling the water on their skin, safe in the hands of mom or dad, the aroma of soap and cream, the sound of water splashing, observing the foam or toys that float and trying to catch them is a real festival for babies' senses, also in the first months of life.
It is not necessary that the bath be very long, or even that it be daily if our child does not enjoy the water excessively, but it will soon become one of his favorite moments of the day, and even more so if we accompany the time in the bathtub with a relaxing massage before or after the bath.
on a walk
Children need to sunbathe daily to synthesize vitamin D, essential for the correct assimilation of calcium and for this mineral to be deposited in their bones. But also, when walking in his stroller or in a backpack or sling, the baby perceives other sounds, smells and colors, feels temperature variations and listens to us in a different situation than usual. He moves in a different way, he swings...
Whenever possible, take your baby outside and, if he is able to sit still and time allows, let him experiment in the park with the textures of sand, leaves or plants and enjoy the swings adapted for babies.
at the table
The main food for babies in the first half of life is breast milk. But after 5 or 6 months they begin to try other foods to get used to new flavors.
Allow your baby to touch the food with his hands and put it in his mouth, to experiment and have fun with the food, the spoon and his plate. Cold or hot? Hard or soft? Sweet or salty? Does the finger sink in or can it be held in the hand? What happens if we mix the ingredients that dad has put on our plate? What if I spit it all out?
Food is a wonderful toy that you can share with your child. You will especially enjoy it in a few months, but by the end of the first semester you are already starting to enjoy it a lot.
