Insolent Children: Redefining Disrespect as a Signal for Change

Insolent children are usually described in terms of disrespect: answering back, sighing, rolling their eyes, dragging their feet, ignoring requests, using irony, or "provoking" adults. But that label deserves a second look.

When adults talk about insolence, they often mean behaviour that challenges authority. Yet authority is rarely questioned as fair or ethical in itself; it is simply assumed to be beyond challenge. That assumption is worth examining, because it shapes how we react.

What if insolence is not a character flaw but a message? What if it is a form of self-assertion from children who have not yet learned to express themselves in socially appropriate ways? Redefining insolence opens new educational and relational possibilities.

Quick takeaways

 • Insolence is a message about unmet needs, not a character flaw.
 • It only exists inside a power imbalance between adult and child.
 • Think skills and teaching instead of punishment and repression.
 • Ask what the behaviour does for the child and which emotion drives it.
 • Model the respect you want to receive.
 • A little pushback can signal courage and healthy self-assertion.

Why Insolence Deserves a Second Look

Insolence only exists within a power imbalance: it is the questioning of an authority figure's status by someone assumed to be inferior. That framing matters, because it tells us more about the adult's position than about the child's character.

The behaviours we label insolent are familiar to every parent: answering back, showing ingratitude, sighing, raising eyebrows, dragging feet, ignoring requests, using irony, or "looking for" a reaction. Seen this way, insolence is a symptom of a relationship problem rather than a flaw inside the child. Even everyday difficulties, like easy things difficult, can trigger frustration that spills out as backtalk.

We can ask better questions. Is this self-assertion from a child who lacks the words to say things appropriately? Is it the result of a dysfunctional relationship or system? Is it generated by the adult's own posture, when an order is barked with no respect for the child? Is it a way of speaking learned from daily disrespect, such as threats, blackmail, punishment, humiliation or shouting?

Shifting From Punishment to Teaching

If we accept these possibilities, new educational perspectives open up. The first is to think in terms of skills and teaching rather than punishment and repression. Insolent children need to learn how to ask for things respectfully, and adults have both the responsibility and the means to guide them.

This is the same patient logic behind other developmental leaps, such as the two-year revolution, when big feelings outrun small vocabularies. Learning to name a need calmly takes practice, modelling and repetition, not a lecture delivered in the heat of the moment. Many of the phrases we repeat without thinking come from our own upbringing.

The second perspective is attachment and needs. What do insolent children need? What is missing for them to feel well enough not to need insolence? What positive function does the attitude serve? Which emotions sit underneath it? Is their emotional reservoir full? Do they have enough personal power and chances for control and autonomy, so they no longer need insolence as a demand for power? For further reading, these motherhood blogs offer useful support.

Parent calmly talking with a child who is answering back

Reframing insolence: old reflex versus new response

Situation Punitive reflex Teaching response
Child answers back Demand an apology immediately Name the feeling, teach respectful wording
Eye-rolling or sighing Threaten a consequence Pause, revisit the request calmly later
Child ignores a request Repeat louder Check the request was respectful and clear
Irony or provocation Label the child rude Ask what need is hiding behind the joke
Constant conflict Tighten control Restore choices, autonomy and connection

The Adult's Role as a Model

The third perspective is relationship and exemplarity. Where did these children and teenagers learn this insolence? Am I myself an example of respect when I make requests of them?

Children absorb tone long before they absorb instructions. A parent who snaps, threatens or humiliates is quietly teaching the very behaviour they complain about. This is why modelling calm, respectful requests matters more than any consequence. The same principle applies to shared routines: a dad helping out consistently with chores and bedtime teaches cooperation far better than repeated demands.

Redefining insolence also helps us avoid power games and therefore violence. We should not confuse insolence with emotional expression: children have the right to express what is wrong, even if it remains our responsibility to teach them to do so respectfully toward everyone.

Meanwhile, a certain dose of insolence can be a good sign. It can show audacity, the courage to speak up, the willingness to stand against what feels unjust, the ability to protect oneself from perceived abuse, and a sharp awareness of acts that hurt human needs and shared values.

What the "Good Child" Myth Costs

Boris Cyrulnik, in his book De chair et d'âme, devotes a few lines to "problem-free" children. He notes that the future of wise children is not always a guarantee of eternal happiness, since upheavals will certainly test them.

He describes how Portuguese specialists followed cohorts of children who were doing well, asking for twelve years what the problem was with children who had no problems. As expected, the wise children became well-socialised adults without serious personality disorders. But the researchers were surprised to find that model children, girls more than boys, became anxious adults and were more often depressed than normally difficult children who stirred up small conflicts without personality disorders.

Before adolescence, boys are more often hospitalised because they take more risks, and more often brought to psychology consultations because they are more difficult. After adolescence, the trend reverses: women use more medical care and seek more psychological help. The price of wisdom is high: small transgressors show a self-assertion that makes them harder to raise but perhaps better equipped to speak up for themselves. Just as keeping a child warm takes thoughtful attention, so does nurturing a child's voice.

Practical Ways to Respond in the Moment

When insolence flares, the first move is to pause rather than escalate. Name the feeling you notice, keep your voice low, and postpone the conversation if needed. A short break protects everyone's dignity and gives the child a model of self-regulation.

Later, in a calm moment, teach the missing skill explicitly: how to disagree, how to ask for more time, how to say "I don't want to" without an insult. Role-play it, praise the attempt, and keep your own requests short and respectful. Creative, absorbing activities also give children healthy outlets for big feelings, whether that means homemade finger paint on a rainy afternoon, building original MOC creations together, or a quiet story at bedtime. A simple wooden playhouse can offer the same calming, imaginative space.

Finally, check the balance of power and autonomy in daily life. Offer real choices where you can, and reserve firm limits for safety and values. When children feel heard and have some control, the need to push back through insolence often shrinks on its own.

My hands-on take

In my own home, the eye-roll used to feel like a personal attack, and my first instinct was to clamp down. What changed things was slowing down and asking a simple question: what are you actually trying to tell me? More often than not, the answer was tiredness, hunger or a request I had brushed aside.

I started practising out loud how to disagree politely, and I noticed my own tone needed work too. When I asked for things respectfully, the backtalk dropped. When I barked orders, it came right back. The behaviour was never the whole story, and treating it as information rather than an insult made our home calmer.

Frequently asked questions

Is insolence always a sign of a problem?

No. A certain amount of pushback can reflect courage, self-assertion and a sense of justice. The key is distinguishing emotional expression from a pattern that signals unmet needs.

Should I punish an insolent child?

Punishment tends to feed power struggles rather than teach skills. It is usually more effective to stay calm, name the feeling, and later teach how to express disagreement respectfully.

What if the insolence comes from my own tone?

That is worth checking honestly. Children often mirror the way adults speak to them, so softening your own requests can change the dynamic quickly.

How do I teach respectful disagreement?

Model it, name it, and practise it in calm moments. Give the child simple phrases for disagreeing and acknowledge every attempt, even imperfect ones.
