- Tobacco components affect the maturation process of ovarian follicles.
- Women who consume tobacco usually have worse oocyte and embryonic quality, chromosomal anomalies increase, and their menopausal age can be brought forward between one and four years.
- To give us an idea, the combination of obesity, tobacco and caffeine (very common) reduces the probability of having a child by 30%. Hence, when a couple is looking to have a baby, it is very important that they do not smoke, that they control the level of caffeine they ingest and that they have a controlled diet in order not to gain extra kilos. Tobacco and male fertility
- Not only female fertility is affected by habitual tobacco consumption: smoking also negatively influences the quality of sperm in men.
- Nicotine and some toxins found in the composition of cigarettes can cause sperm DNA fragmentation. This causes damage to the genetic material of the sperm, which consequently makes it difficult to achieve pregnancy.
Smoking and assisted reproduction
Smoking also does not help couples who have to resort to assisted reproduction to try to have a baby. Quite the opposite. Smoking hinders the process and puts the success of the treatment at risk. In fact, according to data collected by Ser Padres:
- If they have to resort to assisted reproduction treatment, smoking women have more problems when it comes to getting pregnant, as Dr. Victoria Verdú, gynecology coordinator at the Ginefiv clinic, explains to us.
- The effect that tobacco has on them is comparable to being ten years older, which implies that during treatment more medication is required for ovarian stimulation, greater cancellation of assisted reproduction cycles and lower implantation rates.
