Sunglasses for children: what should we take into account? 2026

Many parents are aware of the dangers of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, especially among the little ones, so we are always attentive to protecting children's skin.

As with the skin, the eyes of the little ones are also characterized by being very delicate, although within the usual protection package, the most common thing is to forget about them.

Is it true that children need to wear sunglasses?

Children are very susceptible to damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays. For example, your skin may burn more easily, compared to the skin of a teenager or an adult. And your eyes can also be seriously damaged.

In fact, ultraviolet rays can penetrate deeply into the eye, increasing the appearance of different eye problems and conditions, such as:

• Macular degeneration. This is an eye disease that can worsen over time. It becomes the main cause of severe - and permanent - vision loss in people over 60 years of age, and occurs when the macula, the small central portion of the retina, wears away. The retina is the light-sensitive nervous tissue found in the back of the eye. Although in most cases it does not cause blindness, it can cause serious vision problems. Because the disease occurs as we age, it is often known as age-related macular degeneration, but there is also another form of macular degeneration, which affects children and young adults, known as juvenile macular degeneration or Stargardt disease.
• Cataracts. Consists of the formation of cloudy areas in the lens of the eye that can cause changes in vision. The most common symptoms are usually blurred or cloudy vision and increased sensitivity to glare.

Since it is really important to protect your vision, especially because children tend to spend a lot of time outside the home, playing outdoors, and their eyes have not yet fully developed, it is essential to use sunglasses that protect them against 100% of UVA and UVB rays, even on cloudy or rainy days. Because? Very simple: ultraviolet rays also penetrate through the clouds, so they do so practically all year round.

At what age should children start wearing sunglasses? What requirements must they meet?

Experts recommend that children start using sunglasses between two and a half and three years of age, since this is the moment from which the child can wear sunglasses without being tempted to take them off.

From this age onwards, it is necessary and essential to choose children's sunglasses that are suitable, and that protect safely and effectively. It is essential, for example, that the lens material is polycarbonate, since it is an ideal option for the little ones as it is much more resistant to impacts and lighter compared to standard lenses. In addition, polycarbonate is, in itself, a good protector against UV rays.

To prevent peripheral sun from entering, it is an excellent idea to choose a large frame, thereby providing the best possible protection. Not only will it help block most of the UV rays, but it will also keep out sand and other elements that could damage your child's eyes.

It is also highly recommended that the frame should be flexible and easily adjusted. It is best to choose glasses with spring hinges that can extend beyond 90 degrees, as they are less likely to break.

How can we get the child to wear his sunglasses?

Especially when they are small, it is common for the child to be tempted to take them off from the moment we try to put them on. To ensure that they wear them for at least as long as possible, it is essential that the different members of the family lead by example.

For example, if as parents we wear sunglasses and also put on a cap or hat every time we go outside during summer days, it is much more likely that children will tend to imitate that behavior.

It is also advisable to let the child choose their sunglasses, so that they are committed. And if they have helped us choose them, they will probably like their design and style, and will be more excited about them.

And, as you can imagine, it is essential that they have the proper approval, which will provide us with the necessary guarantee and peace of mind that they comply with the current protection regulations.
