The eternal headache of parents with cleaning children's pacifiers is an issue to which we have not yet reached a clear conclusion. Some studies determine that cleaning the pacifier with the parents' saliva is the most recommended, and even praise it over others since they say they transmit beneficial organisms to the baby's immune system.
We are afraid of overprotecting children and that they will grow up in a bubble. The same thing happens with hygiene, not allowing anything to touch them or get dirty can be harmful to them, as they do not come into contact with the world and when they start school they can be a clear target for bacteria and viruses. Your immune system needs to deal with stimuli to learn to defend itself. Pediatrics has shown the results of children whose parents clean their pacifier with their own saliva, and the results are striking: the chances of contracting asthma by the time they are one and a half years old are reduced by 88%, as is the chance of eczema or allergic reactions to foods, which are reduced by 63%. The explanation for this phenomenon would be that, faced with an immune system unaccustomed to facing external threats, when it encounters some element that is unknown to it, it reacts disproportionately, causing diseases such as asthma and other atopic disorders such as allergies.
The research that was carried out in Sweden required the participation of 184 children, analyzing saliva samples from them when they were 4 and 6 months old to compare it, and later interviewing the parents about how they cleaned the pacifiers. The oral flora of those who cleaned the pacifier with saliva compared to those who did not was different, and this composition of saliva usually corresponds to the microorganisms that defend the small intestine, containing more organisms in its composition and therefore protecting them to a greater extent than those that do not have them. In this way, they rule out cleaning the pacifier with boiling water or a jet of cold water, but they do not talk at any time about the risks that may arise if parents do not properly clean their mouths, if they smoke, or have any disease that could be transmitted to them.
Dr. María Jesús Cabrero Pérez, a prominent specialist in pediatrics and coordinator of emergencies and outpatient consultations at the Valdecilla Hospital and member of Top Doctors, states that "there is no solid scientific evidence that can support it. The hypothetical beneficial effect of increasing the bacterial load to reduce allergic diseases such as asthma and atopic dermatitis does not compensate for the risk of transmission of other bacteria." In this way, she warns about the risk that we are causing to babies "in the parents' mouths there may be microorganisms that are transmitted and can increase the incidence of cavities.” And he recommends "washing hands, avoiding people with respiratory diseases, not breathing an environment with tobacco smoke, correct vaccination of them and the environment, breastfeeding are the most effective measures to protect themselves from diseases. The pacifier is used for little time and with reasonable hygiene."
