How to Encourage Children: 30 Phrases That Build Real Confidence

To encourage children is to value their effort, their work, their progress and the intellectual or physical processes through which they have the power to change a situation and improve. It is not the same as complimenting them.

Complimenting means stating a positive appreciation about a fact, a past action or a person: saying a drawing is pretty, that a child is a good boy or girl because the plate is empty, or that a child is beautiful. A compliment can be given offhand, without really looking, and it does not open a discussion.

Encouragement takes time and attention. This article explains the difference and offers 30 concrete phrases you can use today.

Quick takeaways

 • Encouragement names effort and process; compliments judge the person or the result.
 • Describe what you see instead of rating it.
 • Ask how and why to hand the story back to the child.
 • Use “I” messages to share your feelings honestly.
 • Say thank you and explain the concrete effect of the action.
 • Regular encouragement supports autonomy and intrinsic motivation.

Why encouragement works better than compliments

Some psychologists warn against counterproductive compliments. Children who keep hearing that they are kind, beautiful or intelligent may feel pressure and think: if I draw badly, my parents will not love me anymore; if I get a bad grade, they will love me less.

Children can also become dependent on compliments, unable to act without praise from someone else, and they forget their own intrinsic motivation. Being labelled with positive adjectives does not give a child the conviction that they can act, take initiative and influence how they are perceived. A compliment can even feel enclosing, as if a label were being stuck on the child.

Encouragement, by contrast, means taking time to watch the child in action or to ask about the result. Saying “I can see different shapes and colours”, asking why a colour was chosen, or saying “I like looking at this drawing because it reminds me of…” is not the same as “Your drawing is pretty”.

What children actually expect from us

Children wait for congratulations, but not only that. They also expect us to share their joy, to pay attention to their feelings and to admire what they have managed to do. That is why encouragement rests on questions, “I” messages, empathy and recognition of effort.

“You were kind, well done” is not the same as expressing gratitude: “We needed quiet time to work, you played alone and were patient, we appreciated that you did not interrupt us, thank you.” The second version names the effort and its effect on others.

The more a child feels appreciated and valued, the more they want to move forward. Positive appreciation guides them toward autonomy, and regular encouragement helps children feel strong and joyful. A simple childcare at home arrangement, for instance, gives you more unhurried moments to notice these small efforts during the day.

Compliment versus encouragement: a quick comparison

Situation Compliment Encouragement
Child shows a drawing “It’s pretty” “I see lots of red and green, tell me about it”
Child tidies up “Good boy” “Thank you, now we can use the table”
Child finishes a puzzle “You’re clever” “It took you a long time and you did it alone”
Child helps at home “Well done” “Meals are calmer when you help, thank you”
Child seems tired “Come on, be nice” “I think you are starting to get tired”

Say thank you and explain why you are grateful

Gratitude is the simplest form of encouragement because it links the child’s action to a real consequence. It works for chores, for patience and for help with a younger sibling, and it needs no reward chart.

Four phrases to start with

1. Thank you for helping me with… 2. Mornings, meals or outings are nicer when you… and I thank you for it. 3. I really appreciate it when you… 4. Thank you for doing… because it means we can now…

These sentences stay factual and keep the child involved in the family’s daily life. They also work well when you are preparing something special together, such as a wedding headdress ideas project or a family celebration, because the child sees their contribution matter.

Make factual observations without judgement

Describe what you see rather than rating it. Observation shows the child you were really looking, and it leaves room for them to judge their own work.

Nine observation phrases

5. We did it together. 6. Wow! You made a drawing or a construction of… 7. You did it all by yourself. 8. You did this, then that, and it worked. 9. You used a lot of paint, bricks or red and green markers… 10. You made it really big, small or colourful… 11. It took you a long time and you succeeded! 12. It was really difficult because… you must be proud of yourself! 13. That was an idea that required thinking and creativity.

Descriptive comments also help when a child is building alone at the table while you sort out practical matters, from children’s caregiver questions to a school trip form, since you can still pause and name what you notice.

Ask questions that value effort

Questions hand the story back to the child. Instead of judging the result, you invite them to explain their process, which builds reflection and pride in the work itself.

Seven questions to try

14. How did you do it? 15. Have you finished? What could you add? 16. You did that, what will you do next? 17. Tell me what you wanted to say with this drawing or construction… 18. Which part is your favourite? 19. How did you think of this solution or answer? 20. Why did you choose these colours, materials or notes?

This approach is easy to carry into play: ask a child to explain a LEGO meaning build, or how they set up a game outdoors, and the conversation becomes about their choices rather than your verdict.

Name your feelings and recognise effort

“I” messages let children see that their actions produce reactions in others. Saying “I admire the way you write” or “I love playing with you” is honest, personal and does not label the child.

Add empathy when you sense fatigue: “I have the impression you are starting to get tired.” And recognise effort explicitly: “This is the reward of all your efforts”, “This result asked for patience and you managed it all by yourself.”

Encouragement also travels through shared activities, whether you are comparing Lego vs Lepin sets, choosing classroom prize box toys or picking comfortable sandals before a summer walk. The point is not the object but the attention you give to what the child tries, adjusts and finishes.

My hands-on take

In my own home, the change that helped most was slowing down for ten seconds when a child handed me something. Instead of the automatic “c’est beau”, I started naming what I saw: the three colours, the wobbly tower, the long silence while they concentrated. At first it felt artificial, and my children sometimes just shrugged. After a few weeks, though, they began explaining their choices without being asked, and I heard far less “do you like it?”.

The other habit I kept is thanking them with a reason. “Thank you for playing quietly, I could finish my call” lands very differently from “be good”. It is not magic, and I still give plenty of plain compliments, but the specific sentences are the ones that seem to stay with them.

Frequently asked questions

Is it wrong to tell my child they are beautiful or intelligent?

No, but avoid making it the main feedback. Labels can create pressure and the fear of losing love if the child fails. Balance them with comments on effort and choices.

How do I encourage a child who refuses to talk about their work?

Stay with observation rather than questions. Say what you notice, then leave space. Children often come back to explain later when they feel no pressure to perform.

Can encouragement be given quickly?

It needs a minimum of attention, because you have to actually look or listen. A short but specific sentence works better than a long vague compliment.

Does encouragement make children dependent on praise?

The aim is the opposite. By focusing on effort and process, the child learns to evaluate their own work and needs less external approval.
