Color blindness is a genetic defect that prevents you from seeing colors correctly. In addition, it is hereditary and is associated with the X chromosome. For this reason, men (8%) suffer from it more than women (0.5%). They are the carriers of the chromosome and men express it.
In the retina there are cones and rods. The cones are responsible for perceiving colors and their genetic modification causes an alteration in their perception. It is essential to detect it at an early age so that it does not interfere with the child's learning.
How to detect color blindness in children
- An ideal time to pay attention to the signs of color blindness is while learning colors. It is enough to perform a task as simple as coloring drawings to realize if it has any chromatic alteration.
- Another of the basic clues is to play with our child, asking him the colors of the fruits. During the game, the little one will be more relaxed and will not perceive that we are doing a small visual test.
- As for clues derived from the game, there are many: mixing colors with tempera paints and observing which colors are used to draw real objects, exchanging chips in the Parcheesi to check if the error is detected or, for example, playing that each person is a color and can only touch things of that color.
- There are specific tests for early detection of color perception defects, but we will need the child's collaboration. A quick and comfortable method is some sheets with dots of different colors (Isihara test) where a person without color alteration sees one number and someone with color blindness sees a different one.
- New early detection tests, which can be performed from the age of 3, are visual tests where we can observe shapes that are very easy to recognize on a background of a color that a color-blind child would confuse with another shape.
- Another test that we use in consultation is the Farnsworth test. It consists of arranging 100 chips of different shades in 15 color ranges. Depending on the established order, we detect color anomalies or blindness of a specific tone.
- Finally, there is a test where the figures are hidden behind colors and they have to match the name of the figure. It is a very simple test that allows you to obtain quick results at a very early age.
