Don't be ashamed of your stretch marks, they are beautiful 2026

Stretch marks occur when the dermis thins and the epidermis sags due to a breakage and partial loss of collagen and elastin fibers in the affected region, which results in a loss of skin cohesion by not supporting the tensile forces of the muscles that hold the skin. These skin atrophies are linear lesions that usually appear during pregnancy and with sudden increases and decreases in weight, and also due to the growth that we experience during adolescence. Between a 75 and 95% of pregnant women end up with one of these extra lines after pregnancy, and most women (and some men, too) have these little marks on their skin. During pregnancy, stretch marks appear due to the increase in the production of endogenous estrogens, which produces an increase in water and salt retention of the tissue itself, with an increase in volume and tension in the area, which weakens the structures of collagen and elastin fibers. The factor The most important risk for the appearance of stretch marks is the state of the dermis, so the worse the condition, the greater the probability of the appearance of stretch marks on the skin. Another factor that influences is stress, a factor that all pregnant women usually experience. There is always an important genetic predisposition and we can distinguish, depending on the evolution of the stretch marks, two phases: • Inflammatory: recent and reddish stretch marks. • Scarring: whitish-pearl color, which will be the definitive appearance. It is soft and depressed. There are pharmacological and dermocosmetic treatments and there are more or less effective ones, but it is always best to prevent their appearance, through good hydration. Regardless of all this, and since it is almost inevitable that none of us have any of these brands, it is better to take them with humor. These pearly lines have been produced by our body's wonderful ability to adapt to provide nourishment and be home to a forming baby. However, for most women, stretch marks are a source of shame and they try to hide and disguise them. We have seen viral campaigns like the one that emerged a few months ago from #loveyourlines that advocated naturally accepting what we all have; Now, they also teach us to love them and see them as beautiful through a new movement that invites us to draw with colors and glitter each of the stretch marks that mark our body. And the results are spectacular.

Glitter on stretch marks

This movement has started through the work of conceptual artist Sara Shakeel, a dentist and now collage and video illustrator who teaches us through her retouched photographs to enjoy our body and not be ashamed of any of the marks we bear on it.
