Psychomotor development, creativity, expressiveness, gestural communication, memory, work ethic, camaraderie, socialization, sports habit, musical sense, knowledge of one's body and its limits, motivation and curiosity... the list of virtues that dance has for those children who practice it is very long, and that is why almost no one has any doubts about how great an activity it is.
However, parents who are thinking about getting their children started in this artistic discipline given the interest they show in it do have a question that they must necessarily resolve before making the decision: at what age can children start taking dance classes?
We ourselves have realized from our personal experience that we also had doubts and that is why we have consulted different specialized academies to find out if there is a quorum among the experts regarding this question. And yes there is. It is at 4 years old when children can begin to receive their first notions of dance. Before this age there are many academies that offer an activity that they usually call “predance”, suitable for children of two and three years old, in which they mainly work on psychomotor movement through games, movement and music, of course.
But it is not until 4 years of age when children develop certain physical and mental skills necessary to learn dance. Above all, their level of attention does not allow them until this age to attend an entire class or even memorize coordinated movements, not to mention their physical limitations, typical of children who continue to refine such basic actions as running, jumping or rolling, for example.
The right time
At 4 years old, more specific dance work can be introduced to the little ones, and it does not matter that they have not previously attended pre-dance because the starting point is very similar in both cases. Furthermore, up to the age of 8, training cannot be very rigorous on a physical level because their bones are not as strong as an artistic discipline as demanding as dance requires, so classes focus on coordination and the development of basic movement skills. It is also not necessary for learning to be limited to a specific type of dance; From the age of four, ballet, folk dance or modern dance are valid alternatives for children to get started in the world of dance.
It will be from the age of 8 when they will be able to receive more structural and therefore more physically demanding classes, but in any case it is essential that they continue to see dance as a form of fun and distraction, never as an obligation or a responsibility. It is as important that the activity is appropriate for their age as the way in which it is approached or taught. And the attitude of the parents has a lot to do with it. It is a good idea not to forget this regardless of whether the hobby that the little ones practice during extracurricular hours is dance, basketball or painting.
