Celebrating Christmas is, above all, celebrating childhood. It is the great confirmation that magic resides in the bright eyes of boys and girls when they admire the lighting of their city, write their wishes to the Wise Men, or enjoy dinners and meals with the usual people like never before. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all children: for many it is only a tragic reminder that luck is not on their side because for them, childhood is compromised by the social and economic situation in which they have had to live.
To put a band-aid to alleviate their situation, a multitude of Christmas campaigns appear from different organizations and associations that seek to fill the void of children without resources with gifts ranging from a plate of hot food, a doll or a soccer ball to the vaccine that saves their lives.
Despite the difficulties of 2020, the numbers once again frame Spain as one of the most supportive countries in the entire world. The Food Bank has food to put in your mouth during these dates.
Solidarity is one of the greatest human virtues and is directly related to respect, empathy and love, which also has a direct impact on the hope of feeling that we can count on others in difficult times. Therefore, it is important to promote solidarity from childhood with small, great things such as supporting the most vulnerable groups.
Like every Christmas, there are many programs from different NGOs and foundations that are carried out based on solidarity to give a pinch of happiness to families who need it around the world. We have selected some of them so that you can discover how easy it can be to give smiles this Christmas.
1,000 Christmas Hearts Campaign
In life before the pandemic, a group of Scandinavian women organized a Christmas market in Madrid for people of all ages to taste and buy typical Scandinavian products.
The money raised was distributed in full among different NGOs such as The Salt of the Earth, Salvation Army or Apascovi. Due to the coronavirus, there will be no Scandinavian Charity Bazaar this year, but they have created a fundraising campaign for those most in need.
Donate toys you no longer use to the Red Cross
Recycling toys that your children no longer use and donating them for other boys and girls who may want them is another great solidarity idea. Red Cross pursues this with its "Your rights at stake" campaign. So that the little ones have a new non-war and non-sexist toy.
If you do not have toys, you can make a donation to purchase those toys for the children most in need.
Green gifts
Educo is a development and humanitarian action NGO that has been acting for more than 25 years in favor of children and in defense of their rights. In particular, the right to receive an equitable and quality education.
Educo's green gifts are designed to meet the needs of girls and boys and range from a basic food kit to an Ella scholarship.
The Tree of Dreams
The banking entity CaixaBank will deliver 25,000 Christmas gifts to children in poverty. Both clients and employees will be able to pick up at their offices one of the letters in which the minor beneficiaries explain which gifts they would be most excited to receive.
Among the collaborating organizations, there are the Red Cross, Cáritas, Secretariado Gitano or Save the Children, they get involved to make possible the wishes of boys and girls who will hardly have the gift they want at Christmas due to their family's limited economic resources.
Elves and Socks
Elves and Socks makes sure that children and adults have toys and food on these special dates. This year they are betting on donations through platforms such as Bizum or bank transfers so that the elves (citizen volunteers) fulfill the wishes of the socks (children and elderly people alone).
Solidarity gifts from the Aladina Foundation
For a decade, Aladina has been caring for more than 1,500 children and adolescents with cancer and their families in various hospitals in Spain. Its objective is to ensure that children never lose their joy or the desire to fight.
To achieve this, one of the initiatives they have launched is La Tienda de Aladina, where you can find various products to make that special gift. All their products are 100% supportive, with which you can do your bit so that children with cancer never lose their smile.
UNICEF's blue gift
UNICEF creates an initiative where the gifts are vaccines, educational materials or treatments against malnutrition. To collaborate you just have to choose the supply you want to send and you can also do it on behalf of another person and give them a personalized card.
A smile for Christmas
The NGO International Cooperation encourages all companies to participate in its 'A smile for Christmas' campaign to brighten Christmas for more than 9,000 people who need a little help.
Each company that decides to participate will receive a box with envelopes. Employees must take a blue envelope from the box where they will find the name of a child; Afterwards, they will have to place the gift they buy for that child on the tree. The NGO itself is in charge of collecting the gifts to distribute them among different social entities in Spain.
A toy, an illusion
The Christmas campaign of the Crecer Jugando Foundation is present for another year, reminding us that play is a fundamental right of the child, as stated in the Declaration of Human Rights of Children.
The number of toys distributed amounts to 8 million in Spain and other countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. If you have run out of toys to donate, you can help by purchasing a pen from their collaborating entities.
The Kings are the children
According to the explanatory video by the NGO Solidary Kids, the Three Wise Men toy factory is running out of toys. For this reason, they ask children who have leftover toys to help the Three Wise Men so that no child is left without a toy this difficult Christmas.
Soup kitchens
Although it is not an exclusively Christmas initiative but remains in time throughout the year, these important dates may be the best time to visit the soup kitchens. You can help the volunteers who prepare and serve food for those who come to the centers.
Here you can consult a long list of soup kitchens to collaborate with them.
