Galexia is the name of a new mobile application, the result of collaborative work between researchers and students at the University of Granada. What is special about it? Well, as its creators, Francisca Serrano Chica and José Francisco Bravo, explain, "it is capable of significantly improving reading fluency in children with dyslexia and reading-writing difficulties, in the form of an interactive game."
The initiative has already earned them the nomination for "Best University Game" in the National Video Game Awards organized by the Spanish Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, and has already been downloaded more than 3,000 times.
Why is it so interesting?
- It is presented in the form of an interactive game, with materials adapted to the participant's academic level, and attempts to promote the playful (in the little ones) and motivational components.
- It is manageable, attractive and easy to use, due to its portability as an Android app, which makes it an interesting resource for the treatment of written language and the improvement of reading skills in cases of dyslexia and literacy difficulties.
- It is an individualized intervention program adapted to the pace of each participant, structured and sequential (part of the reading of syllables, words and, finally, texts) that uses repeated reading and accelerated reading as effective methods for intervention and improvement of reading fluency in dyslexia.
- It is complemented with phonological reinforcement activities, grapheme-phoneme correspondence rules and orthographic patterns, as well as comprehension activities.
- The advantage of Galexia over other 'apps' is that it is the result of research work based on evidence and scientifically validated, which draws on the experience of the work of expert researchers in the field of literacy intervention and software development.
- They are not just games, it is a program for monitoring, adapting and improving the user in each session according to their results.
For primary school children
Right now, the app is available for children from 2nd to 6th grade of Primary Education, and is spreading among Dyslexia Associations, AMPAs, schools in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, such as Argentina, Ecuador, among others. Future developments are aimed at adapting unaappa ESO students and adults.
As its creators explain, the intervention program developed by Galexia is organized so that the user will join an extraterrestrial companion who undertakes a fun and exciting intergalactic journey from Earth to his home planet, Leximundo.
Aboard the ship you will travel throughout the galaxy during 24 game sessions, in which you will carry out various activities and mini-games that will enhance learning and improve reading fluency, in a very enjoyable and fun context, overcoming all the obstacles that you encounter along the way: facing enemy UFOs, solving puzzles and riddles, exploring unknown planets and much more.
Yes it helps the children
According to its creators, "hundreds of success stories have already been presented in numerous schools, endorsed by teachers and experts in dyslexia, speech therapy and education. Studies carried out on people with difficulties show how the reading scores of children with difficulties, after training, approach those of children without difficulties."
As a collateral result, reported by teachers, professionals and families, scientists at the University of Granada have found that it even encourages greater interest in reading. Therefore, it would not only be useful in cases of difficulties, but in the population in general, as an incentive in the development of reading.
