One or at most two hours a day in front of late night, that is the maximum time recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for school-age children. According to the latest data from the Eurodata TV Worldwide panel of the consulting firm Mediamétrie, Spanish children between 4 and 12 years old spend an average of 2 hours and 38 minutes a day in front of the TV, a growing figure in recent years.
This means that many children spend much more time in front of the TV than seems healthy. The explanation is simple: they love it. Cartoons, series, contests, music programs, commercials, sports... Most of them know the programming much better than their parents. And they often don't want to miss trending shows for fear of looking strange when their peers discuss them the next day.
It has drawbacks
1.It has been many years since scientists demonstrated that television content affects children and encourages them to imitate or reproduce the behavior models they see. This is why systematic exposure to violent images is so serious: children learn to solve their problems with violence and become insensitive to the consequences of their actions.
2. Something similar happens with scenes with erotic content. On the one hand, they almost never offer sexual education, for example, the possibility of contracting diseases is never mentioned. On the other hand, they make it difficult for children to distinguish what is appropriate for their age and what is not, which may make it more difficult for them to set limits in the future.
3.Another problem associated with television is that, while kids are lying on the couch, they barely move a muscle. If they also stuff themselves with sweets in front of the screen, the path towards the dreaded obesity is paved.
4.In some cases, TV can even create addiction. These are children who plug it in as soon as they get up in the morning or as soon as they get home from school. They stop doing their homework to watch a series or something else, and when someone turns off the device they scream or appear very irritable.
The life they see on television satisfies them more than their own situation, and thus they avoid their problems in the worst way.
And also advantages
1.Television is a fabulous invention that, in addition to good times of entertainment, allows us knowledge that, without its existence, would be impossible. There is no reason to eliminate it. Used well, it can provide our children with a lot of good things, for example, it allows them to get to know the world, learn geography and customs of other peoples, become interested in crafts, DIY, cooking...
2.The important thing is to study the offer well and do a lot of browsing, taking into account that, many times, programs with educational value are not included in the children's schedule, but rather during school hours or at other more surreal times.
3.There are also movies that are worth it; Some play them at dawn, but they can be recorded to be seen later by the whole family.
4. Watching TV with them and commenting on the content is a golden rule in the use of the small screen: this way they get the most out of good programs, we counteract the harmful effects of those that are not so good, we encourage their critical spirit and, best of all, we have a good time together.
