Why is it not good to slap? 2026

A slap is usually an impulse from parents, a product of helplessness, lack of control, or tiredness in the face of children's tantrums. What they don't know is that doing so is a disastrous victory in their relationships now, tomorrow and always. For years the ineffectiveness of 'the slap in time' as an educational method has been known. Now researchers go a step further thanks to a 20-year study that concludes that children who are physically punished become more aggressive and may suffer intellectual development problems" target="_self.

The study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) finds a direct relationship between physical punishment and some alterations of areas in the brain linked to performance on IQ tests.

No to educational slap

Doctors Joan Durrant and Ron Emson, creators of the study in question, analyzed for 20 years the consequences of corporal punishment such as slaps, spankings, slaps... The conclusion has been overwhelming: "without any exception" physically punished children are more aggressive towards parents, siblings and other children and later their partners.

"Virtually without exception, these studies found that physical punishment was associated with higher levels of aggression," said Dr. Joan Durrant of the Department of Family Social Sciences at the University of Manitoba and Ron Emson of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Direct causes of physical punishment

The authors added that "the results consistently suggest that corporal punishment has a direct causal effect on externalizing behavior, whether through a reflexive response to pain, modeling (a type of behavior is encouraged by example), or coercive family processes."

This study also reveals that these same physical punishments during childhood are associated with mental problems such as depression, anxiety, and drug and alcohol use in adolescents and adults. They conclude that punishments can even "change areas in the brain linked to performance on IQ tests and increase vulnerability to drug and alcohol dependence."
