The pretzel is the most popular traditional bread of German origin throughout the world. It is easily recognizable by its characteristic bow shape and slightly salty taste. It is also a must at the world-famous Oktoberfest party and is also typical in very distant latitudes such as Australia and North America.
Do you know where its name comes from? Its original meaning comes from Latin and translates as “small arm” because its shape resembles two intertwined arms. In addition, there is an American variant, pretzels, which have a crunchier consistency than the originals because they resemble a cracker more than a bread.
Its origin seems to be related to the Celtic festivities that were celebrated at the beginning of spring, when the sun transits the constellation of Aries. the ram, so its characteristic shape would represent the horns of this zodiacal animal.
The Romans called them panis tordus. Around 610, the Benedictine monks of Burgundy and the Rhineland adopted them to give them as a reward to children who did their schoolwork.
Its oldest representation appears in the Hortus Deliciarum, which dates back to 1190. One of the miniatures in the codex shows a scene of a banquet in which Queen Esther and her husband, the Persian king Ahasuerus/Xerxes, participate. On the table, you can see a slice on the king's right.
In the Catholic tradition of southern Germany, "palmbrezel" were used to decorate the palms that were brought to church to bless on Palm Sunday (Palmsonntag).
The good thing about pretzels is that they are perfect for experimenting and adding flavors to the original recipe such as garlic, honey or almonds. Once you try them, you won't be able to stop making them and experimenting.
Today we bring you the recipe for this famous bread with which you will make the snacks of the little ones in the house (and the older ones) happier. Shall we start?
