It is normal for us to become overwhelmed by the increasing demands of babies at night. During the day it doesn't ask for as much, and at night it doesn't let us rest, which ends up causing enormous exhaustion in both the mother and the father. Miryam Triana, head of the Breastfeeding Medical Consultation at the Vithas Nisa Pardo Hospital in Aravaca, gives us a series of guidelines and advice to explain why it happens and how to treat it.
Why do you ask for more at night?
It is a reality that newborn babies tend to spend more time awake at night than during the day. When I ask parents in the consultation about sleep in the first week of life, the most frequent response is: "well during the day he sleeps well, he takes naps of almost 3 hours, but at night he has a spree, he asks for feedings every hour!"
Nothing strange is happening. This is normal for two reasons:
- Newborns do not distinguish day from night. We say that they have an ultradian sleep pattern, that is, they sleep in various periods throughout the day and are not governed by light and darkness. This is usually the case until approximately 2-3 months.
- On the other hand, maternal prolactin.
And what can we do to improve it?
On the one hand, I recommend that mothers maintain their usual activity during the day, even if the baby sleeps. Let there be light and noise at home, even if the child is sleeping.
It is also good to try to sleep when the baby sleeps, and take advantage of their daytime naps to rest as well. At night, we have to try to make it easy for ourselves. The ideal is to have the baby close (a crib next to it, or a co-sleeping crib) and put the baby to the breast as soon as we notice that he or she wakes up. If it is not essential, we do not have to change the diaper or turn on the lights, so as not to keep the baby or ourselves awake.
Can we replace one of the night feedings with a bottle so that the mother can rest?
It is not the most recommended. We have already talked about how to establish breastfeeding it is necessary for the baby to breastfeed on demand and do so frequently (between 8-12 feedings a day in the first weeks). Frequent sucking is the best mechanism to increase milk production.
On the other hand, we have mentioned that prolactin is secreted at dawn, so night feedings are essential.
The best thing, therefore, is to sleep when the baby sleeps during the day, or, if necessary, skip a feeding to rest for more hours in a row, the ideal is to do it during the day.
