Between 18 and 24 months, the child spends a lot of time destroying and building, destructuring and re-structuring, something he will do with his towers and simple constructions.
“They need to throw away to build again,” says Susanna Fusté, educator at the Espai Familiar Casa dels Colors, in Barcelona. Symbolically they are experiencing the following idea: if everything I am is broken...it can be built again. And this has to do with the fact that it is precisely at this age when they are “breaking” the old relationship with mother and caregivers. Soon the little one will begin to claim it with the word: “No” is his way of claiming his autonomy.
Among the favorite games of this age, in fact the ones that arouse the most laughter, are plucking or hiding. They put their physical abilities at the service of escaping from the adult or hiding from him, to prove again and again (at a symbolic level) that nothing is happening, that we still love him the same even if he moves away, that he can move away a little without anything happening to him or us and that if he hides, we are going to look for him because it is important... of course!
It is also the age of direct or delayed imitation: leading the way the parents make the food or comb the doll's hair. “It is interesting to continue with recycling such as yogurts, plastic bottles, shells, pine cones… Material that does not have a specific meaning encourages the child to pour his own meaning into it and do what he wants with it,” says Susanna Fusté.
And everyday life becomes an inexhaustible source of stimulation. There are so many learnings in everyday life! For example, wash our hands, suggests Susanna Fusté. It is a calm ritual in which the child places his stool and gets on, modulates the water and looks for the right temperature, uses the soap to wash, dries his hands and when finished we can put words: “Notice how good they smell and how good it is with clean hands after eating.” In this simple gesture the child works with temperature, smell, texture, eye-hand ability, balance... the child of this age needs security, repetition and anticipation. New things will appear in everyday moments.
