Gas is a common nuisance for many babies and it is important that, if we notice that it is causing them discomfort, we help them expel it, since being so young they do not yet know how to do it on their own.
The discomfort caused by gas can be intense and cause the baby to cry, which can lead us to think that it is colic, but we should not confuse it. Colic is painful contractions of the abdomen that some babies suffer during the first twelve weeks of the child's life. They usually occur more in the evening and last approximately two hours. Two very long hours in which the baby cries inconsolably and the parents don't really know what they should do to help their child.
During periods of colic the baby has a hardened belly and appears agitated, upset, restless and irritable. Furthermore, it is common for the child to not be able to expel gas when he or she is in the middle of a “crisis,” but that does not necessarily mean that the child has gas.
Baby's gases are of two types
There are two types of gases: stomach gases and intestinal gases.
Stomach gases come from the air that the baby has swallowed during feeding or that has been absorbed during a period of crying.
Intestinal gas comes from or is usually caused by poor digestion (fermentation) of carbohydrates in the colon or as a result of food intolerance (for example, to lactose).
To prevent its appearance in the case of intestinal gas, there are some cases in which the pediatrician recommends changing the adapted milk given to the baby for another or giving him a medication that promotes the expulsion of gas bubbles.
If we notice that the cause of the gas is the absorption of air and that this makes the child feel uncomfortable during feeding, we can stop every five minutes to burp. If he drinks breast milk, we will put him between one breast and the other, although if the posture is good he will not have to swallow air. In any case, it is not mandatory for the baby to pass gas.
The best positions to expel gases
Each baby is different, and each mother ends up finding the best way for her child to release gas.
