Cramps during pregnancy: when is it a warning sign? 2026

Constant vomiting, presence of blood or abnormal discharge, serious bumps in the abdomen, high fever, or pain when urinating are immediate alarm symptoms during pregnancy. Not typical physical discomforts that are also common consequences of pregnancy, such as constipation, pain and bleeding gums, or cramps. The difference is that if all the first ones appear (and a few more), you should urgently go to a medical specialist; with the second ones, in general, there is no choice but to learn to live with them and limit them with a series of tricks or habits. Cramps, for example, which are very typical in the legs - they can also be felt in the stomach - during the second and third trimester, are very striking because they are very noticeable and cause pain, but they are not really a warning symptom during pregnancy except for small exceptions associated with other symptoms or a prolonged appearance and an abundance of them.

As the Murcian Fertility Institute (IMFER) warns, “cramps should not include fever or excessive bleeding, and if you have a history of miscarriages or they persist longer than normal, you will have to consult a doctor.” These are the only cases in which this common pregnancy symptom can be alarming, and therefore, when it occurs in this way, it is advisable to put yourself in the hands of a medical specialist and explain the situation. It does not have to mean anything serious, but it is an abnormal situation that the expert who controls and monitors the pregnancy process must know to act accordingly.

Causes of its appearance

If they appear alone, something that can happen during the day but often at night, while you sleep, there is nothing to worry about. Although the exact reason why they appear is not known for certain, there is a certain consensus among the medical community in associating them with circumstances typical of pregnancy such as the metabolic, vascular and nervous changes in the body that occur in this nine-month stage, and also the correction of the axis of the spine as the uterus grows, which involves greater compression of the nerves that link to the legs, the area where the protagonists of this text appear.

Its appearance is almost irremediable, but it can be prevented and also suffocated more quickly if you know how to act. It is essential to pick up and stretch your legs when they appear, not remaining fixed waiting for them to pass by in the same position. This way they will hurt more and also last longer. Afterwards, stretching the affected muscle is also recommended to relieve the tension that accumulates in the area with a cramp, and even walking a little, even when suffering in bed. It is enough to walk down the hallway a little to alleviate the discomfort they leave behind.

Can they be prevented?

On the other hand, to prevent them, there is nothing better than maintaining healthy habits during pregnancy, both in terms of nutrition and, especially, physical activity. Eating healthy and varied, and above all drinking water constantly to ensure hydration, and staying active, always adapting the sport to the circumstances and not the other way around, is essential in many ways, also to combat cramps in the second and third trimester. In addition, there are expert opinions that link the abundance of cramps during pregnancy to heels, something that also harms the health of the back and circulation - varicose veins are a consequence of this - so avoiding them is also highly recommended; pregnant and flat, comfortable shoes is the successful formula.
