According to popular belief, pregnant women about to give birth should be alert on full moon days, as it is likely that they will go into labor right at that time.
However, most of the scientific studies carried out in this regard do not seem to confirm this romantic legend and suggest that there is no relationship between the peak moment of our satellite and the number of births. Furthermore, the full moon would also not affect the number of car accidents, hospital admissions, cases of depression or criminal activity.
But even within science there is debate. In 2004, a study carried out with data from a clinic in Barcelona indicated that there was a relationship between the full moon and hospital admissions. The authors explained their results based on the possible effect that the gravitational attraction between the moon and the earth would have on the blood, similar to what happens with the tides.
Now, a scientist from the University of California refutes this study with an article published in the journal Nursing Research that re-analyzes the data from the Barcelona work. The researcher refers to the so-called “confirmation error”, which would be the tendency to interpret information in a way that confirms our belief, ignoring data that contradicts it. In this case, when births occur on a full moon, everyone remembers them, while when the birth does not correspond to this moment, we forget them, since they do not correspond to what we believe.
In his criticism, the author indicates that the authors of the previous study made some inaccuracies by not considering the variability of the lunar cycle (which does not always last exactly 29 days). With respect to the gravitational attraction that the moon exerts on the fluids of the body, this would be insignificant, since it depends on both the mass of the fluid and the distance to it. So, following these parameters, the objects closest to the woman (cars, houses, hospitals...), would have much more influence than the moon on the triggering of labor. Furthermore, even if the moon's attraction had an effect, it should be similar in the full moon and new moon phases, and yet there is no increase in the number of births during the latter.
In short, although everything seems to indicate that the effect of the full moon on births is nothing more than a myth, it seems that not even scientists agree among themselves. The debate is served.
