When our little ones have a cough, any remedy we can think of is good to try to relieve it. At the end of the day, all we want is to see him healthy and strong. But, sometimes (and to quote the proverb) “the cure is worse than the disease.” And for that reason, today we want to tell you some news, with a dramatic outcome.
Little Leila Landimes is the clear example of this. This eleven-month-old girl spent nine days in intensive care, after which she died as a result of ingesting camphor oil that her parents had put on her chest to calm her cough.
After the death, her mother, Jessica, 23 years old, wanted to share a lot of photos of her little girl along with a description of everything she experienced in order to alert other parents about the use and dangers of this oil.
In this case, the little girl reached for the oil that her parents had left on the headboard of the bed and spilled it all over her body, reaching the point of ingesting it.
The symptoms were rapid: as his mother comments, he began to cough non-stop, having small seizures and, in addition, his lips began to acquire a bluish tone due to lack of air. Her mother rushed to the hospital where she was admitted for nine days until she could no longer fight for her life.
What is camphor oil?
Camphor oil is a very famous component (such as Vicks Vaporub) of various products that are used, among other things, to calm children's coughs due to the very strong aroma it gives off. It is not recommended for children under two years of age or for people who suffer from epilepsy. The reason? Apart from all the fatal consequences that can be triggered if ingested, it can cause seizures in some people and, in addition, respiratory crises.
What do pediatricians think about camphor oil?
As mother and pediatrician Amalia Arce explains, this type of oil is totally not recommended for children. It is not suitable for application under any circumstances on any part of the body.
“Camphor has historically been used as an aphrodisiac, contraceptive, abortifacient, lactation suppressant, nervous system stimulant, cold remedy (by application to the chest or by vaporization), as a liniment for muscle pain, antipruritic, insect and rodent repellent, etc. Despite the fact that in 1983 in the USA the Food and Drug Administration withdrew many camphor preparations and limited its concentration to a maximum of 11% in the different presentations, poisonings of varying severity have continued to occur. In the International Vademecum there are numerous presentations that contain camphor, especially in the form of camphorated alcohol, liniment and as cold remedies in patches or balms, some of them very popular. "The use of this type of preparation has been discouraged by pediatricians for years because it obviously does not compensate the risk with the more than dubious benefits; it is likely that we will still encounter some cases of camphor poisoning."
