Although it is true that conscious parenting is a word that has become very fashionable in recent years, the reality is that it is a philosophy that, in one way or another, has always been present in many fathers and mothers, despite being a growing trend in many circles of mothers, and despite being considered an authentic 'New Age' trend. Be that as it may, it is also understood as a type of conscious parenting, or even as peaceful parenting.
Many fathers and mothers, when expecting their first child, usually have a kind of existential crisis about the type of father or mother they will be. And many are asking the following question: How are we supposed to raise our child to become a self-confident human being, when, above all, we ourselves may still feel deficient in many ways?
What is conscious parenting?
Consciousness, conceived as a concept, is something that we can understand, but in most cases it is somewhat complicated to practice. However, constant practice can be useful in helping us improve.
When it comes to conscious parenting, it means being conscious in all the interactions we have with our child. Ultimately, it is about connecting with it on a much deeper level, and nurturing its essence.
It is evident that, in most cases, it requires and necessitates a change in the way we view the child's behavior, and responding fully and completely consciously to their different needs. In short: it means seeing our children as they are, even seeing the “spirit or the authentic essence of their being.”
Conscious parenting does not operate on specific rules, but this does not mean that children do not have limits. It is, in fact, a fairly common mistake.
One of the greatest advocates and one of the main people responsible for the spread of conscious parenting is Dr. Shefali Tsabary, who in her book 'The Conscious Parent' says: "While you may believe that your most important challenge is to raise your children well, there is an even more essential task that you must attend to, which is the basis of effective parenting. This task is to elevate yourself to the most awake and present person you can be."
Some fundamental aspects of conscious parenting
There are several essential elements or aspects on which what is known as conscious parenting focuses. And we can even explain it with a few simple examples:
- Control of the environment. Close the pantry door, instead of punishing the child who sneaks out after having opened his package of cookies without our permission (and when it was not the right time to do so).
- Parents' emotional regulation. Especially in moments of greatest tension, take deep breaths, trying to keep your voice as calm and calm as possible.
- The connection with the child. Because, ultimately, the greatest influence on the behavior of the little ones has a direct relationship with their own emotional connection.
What to do and what not to do when practicing conscious parenting
Traditional parenting places special emphasis on showing the differences between the father and the child. That is, it places special emphasis on expressions such as 'I am your father and you are my son, you must follow me, because I was raised that way'. However, parenting - or conscious parenting - is about the paradigm shift from traditional parenting.
Thus, you need to take into account some of the following questions if you want to start being a much more conscious father or mother:
- Focus on your goal, but always in the long term. The child's indiscipline and disobedience can trigger negative emotions. If it is not possible to regulate our emotions, you will not be able to be a conscious parent. The key, in fact, is to focus on meeting the long-term goal, since time is of the essence when it comes to building a relationship based on love, empathy and trust, instead of losing your cool.
- Learn to forgive. To err is human, and it is even more human in children. Instead of punishing them for their mistakes, what we should do is help them understand their mistake. Forgive them. In this way, they will be more aware of it and will try not to repeat their mistakes.
- Listen more, talk less. We should always listen to what our children have to say. Asking them questions and listening to their answers will help us understand their perspective. In this way, they will also feel listened to and much more valued.
- Solve your problems. Sometimes, our child's actions can affect a sensitive memory with which we have not yet made peace. Therefore, it is essential to first solve our own problems, before they affect ourselves and later our children. You can do this, for example, by connecting with your inner self or by talking to your partner. It is essential that insecurities do not affect your parenting.
- Always communicate politely. Talk to your child as if you were talking to an adult, respect them and always try to be polite. As a father or mother, you must keep in mind that you are the child's first teacher. Therefore, teach him how to communicate and respond. You must not forget something fundamental: the child takes all the emotional learning from his parents, and will use it later in his interactions with others.
- Behave the way you want your child to be. Instead of what you say, children actually learn from what you do. So before you tell them something, show it to them with your behavior. You must be conscious in your words and also in your actions, so if they do not match, it is common for the child to end up getting confused. For example, if you don't want your child to scream, you shouldn't tell him not to do it while you raise your voice, because it is a complete inconsistency. What's more, the child will probably end up asking you: “Then why are you yelling mom/dad?”
- Be empathetic. Before responding to your child, pause and reflect on how you would act if you were in your child's place, in a particular situation. This might help you gain some perspective, and respond accordingly. In this way, when you are empathetic, your child will begin to trust you more, and will ask you for advice.
- Love him unconditionally. We all like to be loved, and children do too. Love gives them a safety net and confidence, it makes them feel safe. Children are highly sensitive to their parents' emotions, so any negative feelings we project onto them can confuse or scare them.
Although it is easy to yell at the child or impose ourselves above him/her, the truth is that trying to carry out a much more conscious parenting will be much more positive not only for you as a parent, but also for the child.
