Have you ever heard your baby's continuous crying and your heart breaks because you can't figure out what's wrong and be able to calm him down? Do you know that signing can be a way to address this problem and that it can strengthen your emotional bond?
What is sign language for babies?
LaBaby Signs Languages is an early communication technique based on simple gestures that babies can make with their little hands long before developing speech. You may not have heard of it before, but it is not a new fad or a recent discovery, since during the 80s there was a boom in the US thanks to the publications of Acredolo & Googwyn and Joseph García, and even the first studies date back to the 60s.
In all cultures we teach little ones to blow kisses or say goodbye with their hands, and they learn in a simple way. Well, in the same way, we can teach them more gestures so that they have tools to express their needs to us without having to resort to crying. Parents learn to interpret our babies' signals, but especially when we are first-timers we live in more than one situation in which we would like to find a wonderful lamp, one of those from which a genie comes out ready to grant you three wishes... I wish my baby could speak to tell me what is happening to him! When we pass our complete check-up (hunger, sleep, cold, heat, pee, poop, gas, pain...), and the little one keeps crying we start to get nervous, we get frustrated for not understanding what is happening to them and this sensation is spread through the mirror neurons.
When can you start signing with babies?
Around six months, babies begin to develop fine motor skills, and it is from this moment that they can begin to sign.
The milestones to know that a baby is ready are very similar to those at the beginning of complementary feeding: he begins to sit still (since he needs to have his hands free), to point out little things he wants, to develop the clamp movement of his index fingers and thumb, he shows interest in communicating, he pays attention to what we do and tries to imitate us... It is at that moment when we can begin to introduce signs into our daily life in a natural way. For example, we can start with five related to routines and basic needs, and in this way we ensure that there will be a time in the day when we can use them within the appropriate context.
What are the benefits of sign language for babies?
It is important to note that the gestures we use are based on the sign languages of the non-hearing community. Thus, for example, the Baby Signs Language originated from ASL (American Sign Language), and these gestures are the most widespread for early communication with babies, since we also have the added benefit of promoting bilingualism who introduce this technique in their classrooms, since in the same way it increases calm in the classrooms, the little ones reinforce the bond with the educators and their needs are attended to much sooner, something that worries all parents the most when we leave there the little people we love most in the world, why not all of us learn?
