Although playful activity and spontaneity are part of the life of the baby or child in their first years of life, it is important to keep in mind that just as fundamental for their emotional and physical balance is the acquisition of good habits, mainly in the area of food, rest and hygiene.
The acquisition of these healthy habits is formed through the famous “routines”, which are nothing more than the repetition of daily acts that will give the child the security and order they need to stay balanced and therefore HAPPY.
But... what happens to the child when for different reasons, such as family events, trips, vacations, etc., "we take him out of his routines"? Logically and based on the previous definition, he would feel somewhat insecure since he would be outside his comfort space.
When it is their routine or sleeping habit that is affected, we can find various consequences in the child's behavior, so that if there is an alteration in their rest, the result will also be an alteration at a behavioral and emotional level.
We can encounter, therefore, situations in which the child can go from states of euphoria to states of depression, which he does not know or cannot control, as well as states of emotional discomfort that he will not be able to solve on his own.
Do you feel overwhelmed or overwhelmed?
Parents can often feel overwhelmed or overwhelmed by these behaviors of their children. What can be done in these situations?
As far as possible, it is essential to maintain certain schedules despite the eventualities that may arise (especially those during rest), in the same way it is important to verbalize the situation towards the child, so that they feel that we are empathizing with them and understanding what is happening to them, which will help them balance and manage their emotions.
Offering him his attachment object (pacifier, stuffed animal, dou dou, etc.) is also a way to help him stay calmer.
If, due to circumstances, it is difficult to maintain the sleep routine, empathy with the child, transmitting security, being calm, telling the children what is going to happen or where they are going to sleep and why, etc. They are our best allies, in addition to a good portion of patience and humor.
We must not forget that these are specific situations and although it may seem incredible, everything returns to calm when routines, schedules and family spaces are stabilized.
