Lice, just by hearing the word everything starts to itch. Most fathers and mothers have already had to encounter the dreaded lice at some point, but when this encounter occurs for the first time, the stress and concern about making them disappear is very common, in addition to the efforts to know how to prevent lice effectively.
First of all, it must be clarified that there is still a stigma of associating having lice with a lack of hygiene or carelessness, however, nowadays it is very common for children to catch them, since when they are in contact with other children, something that happens daily at school or daycare, the possibilities of infecting them from one to another are very great. In fact, lice do not make any distinction between clean or dirty hair and seem to have a preference for fine, clean hair. It is quite common for schools to receive the dreaded "lice alert" among parents and teachers, which informs everyone that these uncomfortable hair visitors are already among some children.
The two main problems with lice are that they spread from one to another very easily, that they reproduce very quickly and that it is difficult to get rid of them. Fortunately, there are more and more resources on the market for treatments and products to eliminate lice, which makes the cumbersome task of dealing with them much easier.
Why is it so difficult to get rid of lice? One of the reasons is, as we said, how quickly they reproduce, since a louse can live for about 30 days and an adult female is capable of laying between 6 and 10 eggs per day, which gives us an idea of the large number of lice that can occupy our heads or those of the little ones, which is why it is important to act quickly.
In addition to using the comb and lice products, it is important to take some precautions, such as ensuring that children do not share clothing or accessories, checking the hair of the entire family, and thoroughly cleaning objects and clothing that may have come into contact.
Below we explain how to prevent lice in a simple and effective way.
Pediculosis in children
At school or nursery school, children have a lot of physical contact with each other and lice spread very easily. Here we tell you how to prevent lice effectively.
Check the hair of the whole family
During school periods, it is advisable to supervise children's heads weekly. Above all, if there is a case of head lice in the family or at school, or if the scalp is itchy.
Turn to the scavenger
They are special combs with fine, metal tines that make the job of combing hair strand by strand easier.
Remove nits
Nits, or lice eggs, deserve special attention, since they are usually difficult to see and, if they are not removed, they hatch after a few days.
Apply the treatment to dry hair
Water could dilute its effectiveness. You must massage the area lightly and follow the application times indicated by the manufacturer and pharmacist.
Do not share clothes
So that other people do not become infested, we must avoid sharing all items that may come into contact with hair: combs, headbands, hats, scarves, etc.
Isolate and vacuum objects
Objects that cannot be washed should be placed in a closed bag for 3 days: since lice feed on the host's blood every 4-6 hours, they cannot live that long in isolation.
Wash with hot water and iron
Combs and hair items should be boiled or cleaned with a pediculicide. Clothes, sheets and towels should be washed at temperatures above 60ºC and the seams ironed, since lice cannot resist heat.
Lice repellents
Pediculicidal treatments should not be used to avoid infection, as they are not effective and can be harmful. To prevent new contagion, we will use a specific repellent product.
Avoid hot air from dryers
After applying pediculicidal treatments, we will avoid using hot air hair dryers, as they inactivate the residual insecticidal effect.
Consult the pharmacist
It is very important to consult with the pharmacist about the most appropriate treatment in each case. Return to article
Specific products
There is a wide range of specific products on the market to combat lice. Shampoos and repellents are the best known, but in recent years more innovative inventions have been created such as scrunchies or adhesive strips.
The N-Lice® scrunchies are practical elastic bands to collect hair, as well as being decorative due to their colour, in blue and pink, they act as a lice repellent. Each gum is infused with a natural formula of essential oils that repels lice for up to three weeks.
For their part, the Velcro® N-Lice® self-adhesive strips are impregnated with the same formula and technology used in scrunchies to repel lice. They are perfect for preventing this contagion since they are placed on clothing items such as the collars of school gowns and inside caps.
Scrunchie price: box of 4 units €10.00.
Self-adhesive strips price: box of 2 pairs of adhesive strips and felts €10.00.
