Until a few years ago, it was common to remove excessively large tonsils (hypertrophic tonsils), but today the criteria for surgery are much more strict and selective, and few children undergo surgery.
First of all, you have to know if these repeated infections that your child suffers are viral pharyngitis or acute bacterial tonsillitis.
Viral pharyngitis is an inflammation of the throat that causes pain, fever, discomfort when swallowing food and inflammation of the lymph nodes under the jaw. In this case, even if the child suffers from a lot of throat problems, it would be counterproductive to operate, since the tonsils defend him from infections.
The symptoms of acute tonsillitis caused by bacteria are similar: high fever, pain when swallowing, general malaise, loss of appetite, swelling of the lymph nodes in the area and plaques on the tonsils. It takes between seven and ten days for the child to recover. When these bacterial tonsillitis recur frequently, intervention is only recommended if any of the following circumstances apply:
- The child has a peritonsillar abscess, that is, a purulent collection forms that surrounds the tonsil and this abscess must be drained to prevent it from encysting or the infection from spreading. It is a rare and very painful complication.
- The tonsils have become a chronic focus of infection (doctors call them hypertrophic tonsils with crypts or holes on their surface), and the child suffers more than five or six tonsillitis in a few months.
- The tonsils are so large that the child has some difficulty breathing at night and suffers from apneas (longer than normal breathing pauses) during sleep. The child is restless, moves a lot, sleeps with difficulty, snores and at times it seems as if his breathing has stopped. During the day he breathes with his mouth open and is tired because he sleeps poorly.
If your child's infections are acute due to bacteria and any of these conditions occur, the pediatrician will tell you that your child should have surgery. The intervention does not consist of removing the tonsils completely, but rather reducing their size using the carbon dioxide laser that acts as if it were a scalpel.
