The WhatsApp message circulating about olive oil contains statements such as “we are miraculously alive” which is exaggerated and uncertain. The text states that the oils called lampantes are industrial and, therefore, inedible, which would be tremendously detrimental to our health and that of the children who consume it. The reality is different.
Lampante virgin olive oil is a very defective virgin oil and, therefore, cannot be consumed directly like other virgin oils. Nowadays, this oil is refined to obtain refined olive oil, which is not marketable as is due to its lack of flavor and color, but when mixed with virgin or extra virgin olive oil (10%-20%) it becomes marketable and suitable for consumption except that it changes its name to the generic “olive oil”, ignoring the surname of Virgin and Extra Virgin oils, so rich and tasty taken raw either in a salad or on toast.
That is, this oil comes, like virgin and extra oil, only from olives, but the difference is that these are usually of low quality. For example, olives that have already fallen from the tree, those that are pitted or have suffered frost are those that are destined for the production of this oil. The difference is that for its commercialization it must go through thermal, physical and chemical refinery processes that are not carried out in virgin or extra virgin olive oils. Spot.
In a note on its website, the OCU warns that although the majority of media outlets that reported on the study used the data with certainty and validity, others manipulated the analysis and altered it at will, filling the texts with exclamations and alarmist messages.
In this same note he warns that this study is from 2012 and that is why we must be careful when interpreting the results, since they may have changed. In fact, they assure that their analysis helped some brands take action and resume the standard that governs oils.
Furthermore, the Organization of Consumers and Users ensures that whenever information signed by OCU is seen, we must take into account several aspects such as the fact that its information is only published through its printed magazine, its website and then through the official channels of its social networks. They also urge people to pay attention to the tone of the article, since they themselves never use an alarming tone to support their information and, as a conclusion related to the olive oil hoax, the OCU states:
“At no time did we say in our 2012 olive oil study that there were toxic or dangerous oils, but rather that they did not comply with the standard.
Beware of misleading information that uses OCU as a claim and has nothing to do with us.”
