Pregnancy is a wonderful time. Most of the time having a baby is a completely natural process. And, in most cases, after a full-term pregnancy, the woman goes into labor on or near the date estimated by the doctor and gives birth to a healthy baby. Then, two or three days later, she leaves the hospital in the company of her baby and her partner, and begins a new life in the company of the little one.
This would be, so to speak, one of the most idyllic images of pregnancy. However, the reality is that not all pregnancies go well. Different complications or problems may arise that can make the experience, considered one of the most beautiful and enjoyable that could be enjoyed in life, turn into a few months of anguish, worries and nervousness.
This is what happens when, for example, you have gone to your doctor's office and he has indicated that you have a high-risk pregnancy. What does it mean, what does it consist of, and when does it occur? What factors can influence this?
A high-risk pregnancy means that a pregnant woman has one or more factors that can increase her chances of suffering a health problem during pregnancy or having a premature birth. Therefore, it suggests that in order to have a not only healthy but also successful pregnancy and delivery, additional medical care may be necessary.
If your doctor has told you that you have a high-risk pregnancy, it means that there are possible complications that could affect you or your baby, or both. Therefore, the management of a specialist is necessary in order to help you guarantee the best results not only for you, but also for the little one.
When is a pregnancy considered high risk? What are the factors?
There are some factors that, in a pregnancy, can be considered high risk. The most common are the following:
It is one of the most common risk factors. Those women who are under 17 years old or over 35 years old at the time of the baby's birth are at greater risk of suffering some type of complications, compared to women between their late teens and 30s. Furthermore, from the age of 40 the risk of genetic defects or spontaneous abortion increases.
You can begin a perfectly normal pregnancy, without any complications, but then develop a medical condition or condition that ends up placing you in the high-risk category, since it can affect both you and your baby. In this sense, two of the most common problems are:
- Preeclampsia. It consists of a type of diabetes that only develops during pregnancy. When a woman develops it, she can have a pregnancy and a healthy baby, as long as she follows the treatment plan and dietary advice indicated by the doctor. Although it is most common for gestational diabetes to resolve after the birth of the baby, it has been proven that women who have had gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Often, a pregnancy is classified as high risk because of problems that arise at some point during the pregnancy, and that, in reality, have little to do with the mother's health. This is not what happens, for example, with the development of preeclampsia or gestational diabetes. Below we summarize what some of the most common problems are:
- Placenta previa. This is a condition in which the placenta covers the cervix, which can cause bleeding, especially if the woman has contractions. If the placenta continues to cover the cervix close to the estimated delivery date, the doctor may schedule a cesarean section in order to reduce the risks of bleeding not only for the mother, but also for the baby.
- Premature birth. A premature birth is one that begins before 37 weeks of pregnancy. There is no way to know whether or not a woman will experience premature birth (or a perfectly normal birth). However, there are some factors that can put a pregnant woman at risk, such as: certain infections, having a shortened cervix or a previous premature birth.
There are also other factors that can influence the diagnosis of a high-risk pregnancy. For example, being underweight before becoming pregnant, or overweight, having had problems with a previous pregnancy (premature birth or having previously had a baby with a birth defect or a genetic problem), or having suffered from depression.
