You are the parents themselves, who choose the moment to meet your baby: If you want to see him in full body, with a lot of movement, or see his face with features similar to how he will be born... it will depend on when to do the 4D ultrasound (with movement in real time, in video) or 3D (that is, three-dimensional static image, in photo).
4D ultrasound from weeks 16 to 20 of pregnancy
- In the ultrasound you can see the baby's entire body.
- The fetus begins to make active movements, grips its fingers, tries sucking, plays with the umbilical cord... The mother can already feel it!
- The baby is covered with a thin layer of hair all over its body called lanugo.
- The face is formed, eyebrows and eyelashes appear. The eyelids close and do not open again until almost week 28.
- It has long and thin limbs, the size of the head corresponds to almost half the size of the baby. The fetal heartbeat can be heard with the stethoscope.
- You will be able to see if he likes to lean more on the wall of the uterus or on the placenta, and this week you could already see the sex of the baby.
4D ultrasound from 21 to 25 weeks of pregnancy
- It is a good time to still see a large part of the fetus's body and its movements inside the mother.
-The baby is developing his muscles and that is why he moves a lot in these weeks. In his face you can see his particularities and his first gestures, he smiles, he yawns, he even sucks his finger...
-He weighs less than 1 kg, he has a thin face, his cheeks are about to gain weight, the baby in these weeks begins to store fat.
-All parts of the eye are developed, eyebrows and eyelashes are already well formed. Footprints begin to form on the plantar and palmar skin. The baby has the prehensile reflex and the startle reflex.
- In weeks after the 25th you will see the baby in parts, as it will be too big, so when a 3D or 4D ultrasound is done, this phase of pregnancy focuses mainly on the face, to see the features and gestures.
4D ultrasound from weeks 26 to 31 of pregnancy
- You will be able to admire the baby's face, it is already fully formed and defined, with its chubby cheeks. It will be very similar to how it will be born. In the 3D and 4D ultrasound you will be able to see their features, and even draw similarities.
- In these weeks he already reacts to stimuli that are familiar to him, such as his father's voice, music... he opens and closes his eyes.
- The nervous system is sufficiently developed to control some bodily functions. There is a rapid increase in the amount of body fat.
- The baby makes rhythmic respiratory movements, although the lungs are not fully mature.
-The bones are fully developed but are still soft and flexible.
- If you want to distinguish the sex or any other area of the baby, it can be seen, although always depending on its placement.
- As the weeks go by, he has less space to move and it is more difficult for him to change his position.
4D ultrasound from weeks 32 to 38 of pregnancy
- The image you will see of the baby is similar to that of weeks 26-31. During these weeks, the baby gains weight and we see his cheeks much plumper.
- Ellanugo begins to disappear. The nails of the hands reach the tips of the fingers.
- All the baby's vital organs are completely formed, except for the lungs, which are still finalizing some details.
- The bones of the head are soft and flexible so that at the time of birth it is easier to pass through the birth canal.
-Opens and closes his eyes depending on whether he is asleep or not and can now contract and dilate the iris.
- During this period, if at the time of going to do the ultrasound the baby had his feet, hands or cord in front of his face, it will be more difficult for him to change position, because he has less and less space. Therefore, it cannot be guaranteed that during these weeks of pregnancy it will be possible to obtain a clear image of the face during ultrasound.
Ultrasounds are harmless, they do not pose any risk to the health of either the baby or the mother. As many ultrasounds as desired can be performed during pregnancy.
