Request or demand? Telling them apart in nonviolent communication

Request versus demand is one of the trickiest distinctions in nonviolent communication, because the line between the two is drawn by the other person, not by you. You can phrase something gently and still have it land as an order.

This article walks through how to formulate clear requests, why vague phrasing gets in the way, and how to respond when a sincere request is heard as a demand. The practical tools here apply just as well to a partner, a colleague or a child.

Quick takeaways

  • A request can hear a no; a demand punishes the no.
  • Vague phrasing like "give me space" hides what you actually want.
  • Watch for compliance driven by fear, reward, guilt or duty.
  • You cannot know in advance how a request will be heard.
  • Reflect the other person's need back before proposing a solution.
  • Say "I'm disappointed", never "You disappointed me".

Why vague requests hide a demand

A request has to be clear. Vague expressions are best avoided because they conceal a kind of intellectual dishonesty: you leave the other person guessing what you actually want, then feel let down when they guess wrong. Asked "What do you want?", answering "I want you to give me space" or "give me freedom" tells the listener almost nothing they can act on.

The same goes for openers like "Let me tell you" or "Allow me to…". They sound polite but often function as a way of taking the floor rather than inviting a response. If you want to build habits that respect the other person's autonomy, it helps to notice how easily small phrases slide into control. The same principle sits behind easy things difficult: what looks simple on the surface is often the hardest thing to do well.

A genuine request is made in a spirit of giving, not pressure. You ask, and you genuinely leave room for the answer to be no.

The test: what happens when you say no

The real difference between a request and a demand shows up in how the other person treats you when you decline. A request can hear a no. A demand cannot: the no triggers punishment, accusation, reproach, criticism or judgment.

When you formulate a request, you are hoping the other person does not act out of fear of punishment, hope of reward, the belief that you will love them more, a sense of shame or guilt, or the feeling that your request is a duty. Any of those motives turns the exchange into compliance rather than connection. The same principle of controlling pressure applies in many areas of life.

Unfortunately, you cannot know in advance whether your request will be heard as a demand, even when it is kindly worded. If manipulation has been used in the past to get what you want, there is usually a price to pay later. With nonviolent communication, the aim is to stop paying that price by consistently formulating requests instead of demands, much like the honest facts that guide good decisions.

Motivation invited Free giving Fear, guilt, reward
Phrasing Clear and specific Vague or controlling
Goal Meet both needs Obtain compliance

When a sincere request is heard as an order

Even a heartfelt request can be received as an order. The first move is to reflect back what you heard and show that you understood the other person's point of view: "I heard your need to work, I understand your work is on your mind."

Then ask whether both needs can be met at once: "Would it be possible to finish the work that's worrying you and also meet my need for company?" This reframing is close to the empathy work described in labeling children, where the point is to separate the person from the behaviour and respond to the need underneath.

An example from everyday life

If someone tells you "You're useless," you can answer, "You're angry because you feel I didn't understand what you were trying to tell me." Giraffe language always finds a way to respect the other person's need without making them feel guilty or manipulated, and it looks for a way to satisfy everyone's needs.

You can say "I'm disappointed" as long as you don't say "You disappointed me." That small shift keeps the feeling yours instead of turning it into a verdict on the other person.

Finding a solution nobody experiences as an order

In a challenging school, one student heard a demand where a request was being made. In giraffe language, the conversation then turns to a solution: creating a relationship where nobody feels they are being given orders, and recognising that what is being asked is a request, not an authoritarian obligation.

That can happen through a question such as "How can I ask you to sit down without you taking it as something you absolutely must do?" or "How can I tell you what I'd like to do today without you taking it as an order?"

These questions work because they hand the problem back to the relationship rather than to the person's obedience. The same respectful stance shows up when you think about rewarding with food, where a treat used as leverage quietly teaches a child to comply rather than cooperate.

Practising requests with children

Children are especially quick to hear a demand, so it pays to slow down and check what they actually heard. If bedtime turns into a nightly battle, it may be worth looking at child sleep alongside the way you phrase the request itself.

Play is another place where requests can be practised naturally. Offering a choice during stimulation games babies enjoy, or letting a toddler pick from a small selection of toddler toys reviews, gives them real practice at saying yes or no without consequences. This is also why children need our gaze as they learn to make these small choices.

None of this means abandoning boundaries. It means stating what you need clearly, hearing the no, and then looking together for a solution that respects both sides. As with choosing nipple creams, the details of how we care matter, and over time that habit builds the kind of trust that makes cooperation far more likely than any order ever could.

My hands-on take

I first tried this with my own child during the evening routine, and I was surprised by how often my "polite" requests were really orders in disguise. When I started actually waiting for the answer, and accepting a no without a lecture, the tone of the whole evening changed.

What helped most was the simple question: "How can I ask you this without it feeling like an order?" It felt awkward the first few times, but it opened a conversation instead of a standoff. I still slip back into demands when I am tired, and I now treat those moments as information rather than failure.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kindly worded request still be heard as a demand?

Yes. Even a sincere request can land as an order, especially if manipulation has been used before. The way to find out is to notice how the other person reacts when they decline.

What should I do when someone says no to my request?

Reflect back what you understood of their point of view, then ask whether both needs can be met at the same time. This keeps the conversation on solutions rather than on obedience.

Is it wrong to feel disappointed when I hear no?

Not at all. The key is to own the feeling: say "I'm disappointed" rather than "You disappointed me", which turns a feeling into a judgment of the other person.
