With March 8 just around the corner, it is time to vindicate the true values of feminism: the fight for equality between men and women.
One of the ways to do this is through education. In recent years, a series of active methodologies (new ways of teaching in the classroom) have gained great importance that help children consolidate concepts in a more entertaining and less theoretical way for them. This is the case of Game-Based Learning, a teaching method that consists of taking advantage of all the advantages of the playful process in learning.
Its mechanics are very simple: any game (whether board or not) is used to teach any kind of subject. Or, a new one is designed based on what you want to teach so that children learn it through this playful process. It is often confused with 'gamification', another widespread methodology in the classroom and outside of it. In this case, the rewards of the games are used to teach (for example, offering a green sticker if the child does well).
We believe that this new way of teaching (which can also be practiced at home) is a very good alternative for children to learn the meaning of the expression 'gender equality' and the concept 'feminism'. They will think they are playing and yet they will be consolidating concepts in their memory.
To achieve this, we have selected a series of board games adapted to children (although they can also be used only by adults) and that have something in common: feminism. Through them, the little ones will learn what struggle means, what its origin is and even some basic tips that they can carry out in their daily lives to avoid falling into inequality.
Some of these games adapt other classics such as the 'gathered games' and others, such as the Herstoricas Pioneras, are the newest. Do you dare to celebrate March 8 in a different, entertaining and profitable way?
Bataille Féministe
In this particular game made up of 52 cards, the queen has as much or more power than the king. This is a project carried out by the Topla publishing house and is part of the 'Luna' project.
Cosmic
Claudia Palazón Añón, a student of Comprehensive Design and Image Management at the Rey Juan Carlos University, created the game 'Cósmica' as her Final Degree Project, which represents a path through the history of feminism and the figure of women. It will be the chatbot, which can be accessed from Facebook Messenger, that will guide the players around the board.
Feminisms reunited
Following the common thread of the mythical 'Juegos Reunidos', this option goes one step further by proposing a series of questions and answers on feminist themes (history of the most relevant women, sexual diversity, culture in feminism, activism and a long etcetera). With the dynamics of Trivial, it proposes 1,200 questions included in six categories and each one is represented by an iconic woman in that field. The game in physical format can be found in bookstores in various cities in Spain, as well as on different websites.
Historical Pioneers
Behind the name 'Historical Pioneers. Women who changed history' is the success of a crowdfunding campaign thanks to which this game has been able to release a physical version. It is a card game for all ages that aims to make known some women who have done great things in history and about whom, however, little is known. Created as an agreement between the Herstéticas collective and “Autoras de Cómic” they are cards that children will have a lot of fun with. It can be played in different ways and can be found on its website.
Inspiring Happy Families
Recommended for ages six and up, this card game aims to make known those women who have done great things and who, however, are not studied in textbooks. It can be found on different websites for a price of around €12.90.
Little Office
This card game helps educate about gender equality in a playful way. Based on the world of professions, it represents different jobs that can be occupied by anyone, regardless of their gender.
You can get it on the Little-Revolutions website for €15.99
Ms. Monopoly
The successful board game 'Monopoly' has also thought about them. Hasbro has just launched the 'Ms Monopoly' version, a game in which users replace properties with the purchase of some of the inventions of different entrepreneurial and innovative women. Additionally, at the beginning of the game women receive more money and they also receive it when they pass through the exit. Players will be able to build business headquarters to collect rents, buy public services,…
You can find it on Amazon for €24.99
The feminist goose
Do you remember the traditional game of Goose? We all had a board at home. Well now, thanks to the initiative of teacher Ana Gómez Rudilla (better known on social networks as 'lapizdeele'), it becomes feminist. It follows the same mechanics, but each box revolves around a woman who has stood out in some field. This board is available to download for free on the teacher's website.
Who is she?
The feminist version of 'Who's who?' Of course, this game, in addition to entertaining, has the goal of educating: thanks to it, children will be able to discover the names of different women who have stood out throughout history and who, however, are not studied in textbooks. The mechanics are the same as the classic game.
It can be found on the Playeress website for €75
The witches of Farrabús
This game has a very interesting common thread: only the witches will be able to stop the curse of a prince who has ordered his wife to behave like the princesses in the stories. Thus, players must search for the magical elements on the board to undo this spell: the mirror of self-esteem, the shield of No means No, the key that opens slave love,... a game that shows that anyone can be whatever they want to be.
It is available in different online stores for a price of around €24.
