Tricks for riding a bike without training wheels 2026

Pediatricians point out that the great motor development that occurs from the ages of three to four already makes it possible in many cases to ride a bike. However, riding a bike without training wheels begins to be a realistic aspiration later on, from age five, six or older. Surely to avoid trauma and frustration, experts suggest gradually introducing children to the world of rolling vehicles and always safely (helmet, elbow pads, knee pads...).

A good idea is to offer them, from the moment they begin to walk, a tricycle, truck or cart on which they sit and propel themselves with their feet. That's how they get the hang of it. Later you can suggest starting with a bike without pedals. There is no infallible method to learn to ride a bike. The strategy of the bike without pedals is a method to learn. But he is not the only one. Another, less expensive than buying two bicycles, is to get one suitable for the child's size, unscrew the pedals (it is not difficult) and lower the seat.

Tricks to leave the training wheels

Remove the support wheels and invite him to ride. You teach him how to find balance by swinging from right to left and then you let him practice while holding the bike. A very common trick when it comes to removing their fear of the bike is to start with their feet firmly planted on the ground. Pushing the bike from behind, encourage them to lift their feet little by little so that they gain confidence.

Many users are in favor of installing support wheels and raising them little by little, so that the child gradually acquires the necessary balance until they no longer need them.

There is also an appliqué that is placed on the back, a metal stick, that parents hold to help their child maintain balance. You use the stick trick to hold the bike. It will give you security and you won't break your back trying.

You invite him to mount while you continue holding the bike by the seat. You give him a little freedom to find his balance, but without letting go of the seat. You practice until he learns to maneuver. When you feel that he has gotten the hang of the balance, you let him go and run after him. You will fall, but that's what protections (helmet, elbow pads) are for.

Have the child sit on the bicycle, holding on with his feet on the ground, alternating his weight on each foot for a while.

When you start going alone, it is a good idea to put some cookies on the ground every five meters or so. First they are placed in a straight line and then they can move. The idea is to tell the child that he has to go over them. This method will help you concentrate, pay attention and pedal with the steering wheel straight.

Tips for learning to ride a bike

1. Before you start, make sure that the saddle is low enough so that your feet can reach the ground without problems. The act of braking is one that takes the longest for kids to process and master, so it is more than likely that for a good season they will use their feet to avoid falling.
2. It is not convenient to learn to ride a new bike. If it were, it is best that a few weeks before starting the child get used to it with the support wheels.
3. The bikes recommended for the little ones have, in addition to the handbrake, the pedal brake, which makes the bicycle stop when reversing, since between three and four years old the grip of their little hands still does not favor safe braking.

'I don't want to, I don't want to ride a bike anymore'

Do you know how to become the perfect bicycle 'teacher'? If parents feel frustrated by the lack of progress, it is not a bad idea to delegate the role of teacher to someone else: an uncle or cousin. You will have more patience and more emotional distance necessary.

Fear and insecurity are not only normal, but desirable in this type of learning. Being cautious is better than being kamikaze. If the child resists learning, it is best not to pressure, give him as much security as possible (also emphasizing that the protections are really effective) and not turn it into a mission that he may feel is impossible.

Happy adventure on wheels and lots of patience!
