Martial arts: which are the best to start and at what ages 2026

There was a time, not so many years ago, especially after the Karate Kid phenomenon, from the 80s to the 2000s, when martial arts were one of the fashionable extracurricular activities among children. Karate and judo were soon joined by taekwondo, among other disciplines, and specialized gyms flooded the neighborhoods.

It was a golden era for martial arts, which left a fertile ground that still bears fruit today in the form of minors who practice them even though now the options for doing sports have diversified even more.

Many parents of young children wonder at what age they can enroll their children in any of these sports, the vast majority of which are of Asian origin. They know the virtues of these sports disciplines designed for self-defense, both physical and mental, and they want to take advantage of the interest that the little ones in the house show in them so they can try them. But they doubt the minimum age and which of all the available options to target them.

At what age to start?

This question is the easiest to solve since there is almost total consensus among experts on the matter: four years old is an ideal age to start. They can do it later, of course, but from the age of four onwards they will be admitted to many gyms where introductory classes are given to pre-child groups.

It is at four years of age and not before - with rare exceptions - because the child achieves greater control of balance from that age onwards, and also has a dominant hand, which influences skill and precision. These are physical arguments, but there are also mental ones, since at four years old their level of autonomy begins to be real, and their control of emotions is also sufficient to be able to receive the type of training that any martial art requires, among other factors. In short, their psychomotor development is adequate to successfully face learning a sporting discipline with the demands of martial arts.

How to choose discipline?

That said, it is more difficult to answer the second question raised, since there are several martial arts suitable for children from four years old. This is the case of the aforementioned karate, a physically demanding discipline where the development of the psychomotor apparatus, speed and flexibility is enhanced; judo, in which a lot of work is done on control and knowledge of the body through specific techniques and movements of this discipline in which more work is done on the ground compared to karate; or taekwondo, the most dynamic discipline of the three, where explosiveness is one of its characteristics. It is very interesting among other things because in children's ages it is at the same time an individual and collective sport, since technique is trained as a team.

Aikido and kung fu are also two martial arts well known to the general Western public, although their practice is not usually associated with children. However, both are disciplines suitable for children, with kung fu being more spiritual and mental, and aikido more focused on issues such as self-control, body posture or flexibility.

In any case, what is recommended when choosing discipline is that the child is the one who has a voice in making the decision, that he is listened to and involved in it, since motivation is key to liking it. In addition, most of the specialized centers that teach martial arts, if not all, offer the possibility for parents and children to take a trial class, as a way of getting in touch.
