Helping children do things alone is one of the quietest and most demanding jobs a parent has. To grow into maturity, a child needs to meet a certain amount of failure, to struggle against adversity at times, and to live through painful emotions now and then.

As the psychologist Tal Ben-Shahar puts it, think about the price a child will pay later for having known the “luxury” of getting everything they want. That is why learning to trust means learning to hold back, even when helping feels like the loving thing to do.

Quick takeaways

 • Children need some failure and difficulty to grow into maturity.
 • Write down when you stepped in, and whether it truly helped.
 • Montessori’s rule: help me to do it alone.
 • Offer the smallest help that keeps the child moving.
 • Watch your own “you’ll fall” reflexes before acting.
 • Practise trust in small daily moments, not grand gestures.

The Case for Stepping Back

Tal Ben-Shahar opens his book on happiness with a blunt reminder: healthy development requires a child to face some failures, to push against difficulty, and to feel painful emotions from time to time. Sheltering a child from every struggle may feel kind, but it removes the very experiences that build maturity.

The same idea shapes how we think about early development. Even simple choices, like which teething toys to offer or when to introduce a learning toy, go better when the child is allowed to explore at their own pace rather than being steered constantly.

This does not mean abandoning children to figure everything out alone. It means noticing how often we step in, and asking honestly whether our help was needed or simply comfortable for us.

A Simple Exercise to Notice Your Help

Ben-Shahar proposes a written exercise to become more aware of how we intervene. First, look at your relationship with a child and list the occasions where you made life easier for them, or could have. For each one, describe what followed from your intervention or your decision not to intervene.

Then ask yourself, in writing, whether that choice worked in the child’s favour or not. Finally, imagine situations that present a real challenge to the child, something that makes them fight to reach their own goal, and ask what the most helpful position would be.

Should you do it for them, give unsolicited advice, stay indifferent, watch with a smile without stepping in, or offer help without imposing it? Writing it down makes the pattern visible, much like tracking small habits such as family apps or a daily routine helps you see what actually happens.

Choosing your position when a child faces a challenge

Situation Less helpful response More helpful response
Child struggles with a zip Doing it for them Waiting, then offering one hint
Child climbs at the park “You’ll fall!” Watching calmly nearby
Child picks a toy Choosing for them Offering two options
Child serves food Plating it yourself Letting them try, mess included
Child asks for help Taking over completely Helping only as much as needed

“Help Me to Do It Alone”

Maria Montessori summed up this attitude in a single phrase: help me to do it alone. It is also the founding principle of free movement, which lets a baby move and explore on their own rather than being placed into positions they cannot yet reach.

In practice, this looks unremarkable. You let a toddler carry their own cup, however slowly. You wait while a child struggles with a zip before offering a hand. You resist the urge to correct a drawing that is perfectly fine as it is.

The same patience pays off outside the home, whether you are choosing toys for a three year old or planning a trip to the park where the child can test their own limits safely.

Dosing Your Help So It Actually Helps

Useful help is calibrated, not constant. Before stepping in, ask whether the child is in genuine difficulty or simply working through a challenge they can solve. Offer the smallest amount of support that keeps them moving, then withdraw again.

Watch your own reactions too. The familiar “you’re going to fall” is often more about our anxiety than about real danger, and children pick up on that fear quickly. If you notice worries running high, it can help to read about inherited fears and how they pass between generations.

Language matters as well. Naming what you see (“you’re trying hard to open that”) supports effort without taking over, while unsolicited advice tends to close the attempt down.

Everyday Moments to Practise Trust

Daily life offers endless small openings. Letting a child choose between two basket toys at the shop, or decide how to arrange a connected toy set, builds the sense that their judgement counts for something.

Mealtimes are another training ground. Allowing a child to serve themselves, however messily, is far more valuable than a perfectly plated plate, and the same patience helps when you are eating out and the child wants to order or handle their own cutlery.

None of this requires special equipment or a perfect routine. It requires noticing the moment, pausing, and asking: can they do this alone, with me nearby?

My hands-on take

I first tried this with a very slow pair of shoes. My instinct was to kneel down and finish the job in three seconds, and for a while I did exactly that. Then I started simply sitting nearby, saying nothing, and letting the fumbling continue.

What surprised me was not the shoes, but my own discomfort. The waiting felt far harder than the doing. Once I noticed that, it became easier to ask a simple question before intervening: is this actually difficult for my child, or just uncomfortable for me? Most of the time, it was the second. That question has become my everyday version of the exercise, and it has changed far more than shoelaces.

Frequently asked questions

Does letting a child struggle mean I should never help?

No. The point is to dose your help rather than remove it. Offer the smallest support that keeps the child moving, then step back again.

What if my child gets frustrated and gives up?

Frustration is part of the process. Stay close, name what you see, and let them decide whether to try again or take a break.

Is this the same as Montessori’s free movement?

They share the same spirit. Free movement lets a baby move on their own terms, and “help me to do it alone” applies the same trust to older children.

How do I manage my own worry while stepping back?

Start with low-risk situations and notice your reflexes. Writing down what happened afterwards often shows the fear was larger than the risk.
