Child Interrupting Constantly: How to Teach Turn-Taking

A child interrupting constantly is not being rude on purpose: most of the time they have a message to deliver and simply have not yet learned to wait their turn. Impulsivity means acting without thinking and without delay.

Inhibition of impulsivity is the opposite skill: holding back an automatic response, resisting distraction and imposing a delay on yourself. The good news is that this can be taught, with tools rather than punishments. Educating means teaching, not punishing.

Quick takeaways

  • Interrupting usually signals a missing skill, not disrespect.
  • Teach a concrete pause: count to five or breathe three times.
  • Look for the need behind attention-seeking and fill it daily.
  • Build family rules together so they apply to everyone.
  • Warn ahead, use a timer and agree on a sound signal.
  • Agree on a silent hand signal before you need it.

Teaching self-control techniques

You can hand children concrete self-control techniques, such as counting to five or taking three breaths before speaking. When a child becomes aware of the techniques that work for them, they build their capacity to wait.

Name the effort out loud: “It was hard for you to hold back from speaking right away, but you took time to think, and that is a winning strategy.” This kind of feedback turns a struggle into a skill the child can repeat.

Why the delay matters more than the silence

The goal is not a mute child but a child who can pause. Practising the pause in calm moments, through games and role play, makes it far easier to use when the stakes are higher. Parents who model the same pause themselves reinforce the lesson every day.

Looking for connection behind attention-seeking

A child who systematically interrupts may have an unmet need: fear of being left out, jealousy towards the person you are talking to, a need for attention and cuddles, or an important message they cannot yet put into words.

Lawrence Cohen, in his book on play, makes the point plainly: it is natural for a child who lacks attention to do everything possible to get it, so why not simply give it? The behaviour often shrinks when the need behind it is filled. After all, motherhood reshapes priorities, and children feel that shift.

One solution is to spend more one-to-one time with the child, playing without other distractions and offering full, undivided attention at planned, dedicated moments. Isabelle Filliozat recommends at least ten minutes a day of “total exclusivity” with each child to fill their emotional tank. A little wooden house can make that shared time feel special.

Strategy Best moment to use it What it teaches
Counting to five Right before speaking Pausing before acting
Ten minutes of exclusive time Daily, planned That attention is secure
Family rules meeting Calm family discussion Shared respect for turn-taking
Timer or bell signal Calls and appointments That waiting has an end
Busy bag or activity choice Long unavailable stretches Independent occupation
Hand-on-arm signal In the middle of a conversation Non-verbal communication

Establishing family rules

To build cooperation at home, the main tool is a set of family life rules that define the framework for everyone’s well-being and safety. Rules work best when they are few, clear and stated positively.

When a child helps to shape the rules and knows they apply to every family member — “nobody interrupts me when I am speaking either” — they are far more inclined to respect them. This is the same principle that underpins values in teaching and any shared framework.

Set these rules during a family discussion or a conflict-resolution meeting, when everyone is calm rather than in the heat of an interruption. Write them down and display them where the whole family can see them.

Anticipating and preventing interruptions

Beforehand, warn your child as far in advance as possible if you have an appointment, guests or a phone call to make. Tell them when you will be unavailable, for how long, and if useful, why.

For a call or meeting with a defined length, you can symbolise the time with a timer, or agree that you will give a sound signal — a bell, a song — when you are available again. Children cope far better with a visible end point than with an open-ended wait.

If you expect a tricky situation, you can even role-play the scene together to see how the child might react and to try out alternatives within the game. A little preparation goes a long way, much like the everyday routines described in baby care for younger siblings. Helpful breastfeeding management apps can likewise make feeding times more predictable.

A prepared environment

Preparing the environment was central to Maria Montessori’s approach and applies across every area of education. If you anticipate a long stretch when you will be unavailable or need calm, plan what will occupy the child: colouring, card games, construction games, sensory play.

Many sites even show how to make “busy bags” — small games you create yourself and store in transportable bags, such as freezer bags — so the child can choose among several activities. The same logic of matching activity to setting appears in housework according to age and in choosing toys for the car before a journey.

You can also fall back on the classic but effective game of the king of silence, or offer a challenge: “Can you be a statue while I talk to this person?”

Non-verbal signals and I-messages

One useful trick is a non-verbal message. Teach your child to place their hand on your forearm to signal that they want to talk; you then place your hand on theirs to mean “I have seen you; I will listen as soon as I have finished.”

This is one gesture among many: a wink, a thumbs-up, eye contact with a smile all work. The important thing is to agree on the gesture in advance with the child, so the signal is shared rather than improvised.

Words matter too. The clearest way to explain is an I-message: “I need calm and I don’t like being interrupted when I talk with other people. I heard that you want to talk to me and I will be available as soon as I have finished.” If the conversation drags on, you might let the child play with your bracelet, hold your hand or sit in your arms.

Knowing how to wait your turn is not innate; it is acquired, like any other skill, and it comes largely through the example parents set. For more on how children build understanding, see how children understand. Just as with learning to chew, patience grows through daily practice, and choosing the right water safety elements for outings can also teach children to wait their turn.

My hands-on take

In our house the interrupting peaked during phone calls, so we agreed on a signal before the next one: a hand on my forearm, my hand on top of it. The first few times it failed completely, and I had to repeat the agreement afterwards, calmly, rather than in the moment. What changed things was the timer on the table and the habit of saying how long the call would last. My child could see the end, so waiting stopped feeling endless. I also started protecting a short block of one-to-one time each day, without my phone nearby, and the interruptions during other conversations noticeably eased. None of it is instant, and some days we still get it wrong, but the direction is right.

Frequently asked questions

Is interrupting a sign of bad manners?

Not usually. It more often reflects impulsivity that is still developing, or an unmet need for attention or connection. Treating it as a skill to teach rather than a fault to punish works better.

What should I say in the moment?

Use an I-message: state your need, acknowledge that you heard them, and promise a specific moment when you will be available. Then keep that promise, because trust is what makes the waiting possible next time.

Does this work with several children?

Yes, and the rules should apply to all of them equally, including you. Dedicated one-to-one time with each child, even brief, helps prevent competition for your attention.
