Conversations regarding their children's developmental milestones are common between proud parents and caregivers, teachers or tutors. There is no doubt, it is exciting to see how the little one learns new things and begins to explore both his own world and the world and environment around him.
And as the baby develops, evolves and grows, it is common to want to share it with other people, and even compare what your child can do with other children. Or compare it to what your older children did when they were the same age.
But this can become a cause for unnecessary stress and worry, especially when you see or hear about other children the same age as your child who reach developmental milestones much earlier.
Is it actually due to a problem with development? If so, it's quite possible that you are concerned about developmental delays, and what they mean. And, above all, what is known as maturational delay, and what are some of its main characteristics.
What is maturational delay? What does it consist of and when does it occur?
The truth is that not meeting 'developmental milestones' at the same rate as other children does not always have to become a cause for concern. Each child is a world, and so is their own evolution and development.
In fact, not all children develop skills at the same time. Thus, there are some babies who begin to walk from 9 months of age, while others do not take their first steps until they are 15 months old. And this is not a problem: they are within the range considered "normal" of development.
When there is a maturational delay, or developmental delay, it means that the child is a little slower and/or behind in acquiring the skills expected for a certain age.
Children develop skills in five main areas of development:
- Cognitive or thinking skills: Consists of the ability to think, learn and solve problems. It's about how children explore the world around them through their eyes, hands and ears.
- Social (and emotional) skills: Consists of the ability to relate to other people, including abilities such as expressing oneself and controlling emotions.
- Speech and language skills: Consists of the ability not only to use language, but also to understand it.
- Fine and gross motor skills: This is the ability to use small muscles (fine motor skills) and large muscles (gross motor skills) to grasp objects, turn around, or walk.
- Activities of daily living skills: Consists of the ability to handle day-to-day tasks, such as eating, dressing, or bathing.
It is common for maturational delay (understood as developmental delays) to affect more than one area of the child's development than those mentioned above. Thus, when a child has delays in many or all areas, it is known medically as 'global developmental delay'.
There is no single cause that causes the appearance of developmental delay. But there are some risk factors that must be considered, such as:
- Complications in labor and birth: For example, being a premature baby or being born too soon, having low birth weight or not receiving enough oxygen at birth.
- Environmental issues and conditions: Following unbalanced and poor nutrition, exposure to alcohol or drugs during pregnancy, trauma, difficult family situations or lead poisoning.
- Other medical conditions and problems: Vision problems, chronic ear infections, illnesses or injuries that can have a significant long-term effect on the child's daily activities.
When a child does not meet several developmental milestones as quickly as expected, the pediatrician may suggest performing an early intervention evaluation, which helps the specialist evaluate his or her skills and development in order to get an idea of what his or her most problematic spots are.
Not to be confused with developmental disability
It is common for many doctors to use the terms maturational delay, developmental delay, and developmental disability with the same meaning, when in reality they are not the same.
For example, developmental disabilities are problems that children do not outgrow or achieve, but they can progress. It is not, therefore, the same as a learning problem, but they can make it difficult. Some conditions that can cause developmental disabilities include Angelman syndrome, autism, Down syndrome, brain injuries, or fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).
Sometimes it is difficult to determine if a young child has a disability or delay, and what caused it. Even when it is not entirely clear what is causing the delay, early intervention tends to be very helpful.
