Difficult behaviour in children rarely has a single cause, and that is the first thing worth understanding. Several factors usually interact with one another, and contextual pressures can amplify what you see. A child who is already aggressive or provocative may become far more so after a stretch of fatigue and stress, for example following the birth of a little sibling.

Isabelle Roskam, a doctor in psychological sciences, invites parents to place any behaviour judged difficult back into its context. A behaviour reflects how a child is able, or not able, to respond to the demands of the environment where they grow and develop. That framing changes the question from "what is wrong with this child?" to "what is this child responding to?"

Quick takeaways

  • Difficult behaviour usually has several interacting causes, not one.
  • Fatigue, stress and change amplify behaviour you already see.
  • Roskam groups difficult behaviour into six categories.
  • These behaviours are common and normal in immature young children.
  • There is no sharp line between normal and pathological behaviour.
  • Culture and adult history shape what gets called difficult.

Six categories of difficult behaviour

In her book on understanding and supporting difficult children, Roskam suggests that difficult behaviours can be grouped into six broad categories. These are not rigid boxes, but useful landmarks for noticing what is actually happening in a given moment.

The categories are restlessness (constant movement), opposition (active refusal through systematic noes, or passive indifference to requests), and provocation (seeking power and trying to make adults uncomfortable or lose their temper). Aggressiveness is described as a kind of "tough guy" attitude, while impulsiveness means wanting everything immediately and possibly putting oneself in danger by skipping the mental stop before acting. Emotional instability covers rapid, frequent shifts between emotional states with reactions that are disproportionate.

Why the labels matter

Naming the pattern helps you choose a response instead of reacting blindly. A restless child needs movement outlets, while a provocative one may need less audience and more calm. For younger children, sensory play can be a useful outlet, and these sensory toys toddlers are worth considering.

Normal immaturity, not a clear dividing line

Roskam writes that these behaviours are in themselves common and normal in young children because of their immaturity. As a result, there is no sharp boundary between a normal behaviour and a pathological one. That is an important reassurance for parents who worry that a hard week means something is permanently wrong.

The picture is complicated further because calling a child "difficult" varies from one adult to another, depending on that adult's personal history. What exhausts one parent may barely register with another, and that difference says as much about the adult as about the child.

Watching how cause and effect land for a child can also help you read their reactions, and these cause effect toys support that kind of learning. If care arrangements are part of the stress, it may help to look at caregiver problems before assuming the behaviour is the whole story.

Six categories of difficult behaviour and what they look like
Category What you may see Useful response
Restlessness Constant movement, difficulty staying still Offer movement breaks and active play
Opposition Systematic noes or passive indifference Keep requests short and consistent
Provocation Seeking power, trying to upset adults Stay calm, reduce the audience
Aggressiveness A "tough guy" attitude toward others Set limits clearly and calmly
Impulsiveness Wanting everything now, acting without a pause Practise waiting in small steps
Emotional instability Fast, exaggerated emotional swings Name feelings and co-regulate

Culture shapes what counts as difficult

Culture of origin also influences what an adult finds acceptable or not. People from a Mediterranean culture will not find it difficult when a child joins adult conversations and talks with their hands, while people from a Dutch culture may readily call that child exuberant and struggle to tolerate the extraversion.

This does not mean every behaviour should simply be accepted. It means that before labelling a child, it is worth asking whether the friction comes from the child or from a mismatch between the child's natural style and the adults' expectations.

When the mismatch is real, clear routines can reduce daily friction, and a predictable bedtime supported by songs before bed can make evenings calmer. Parents also need steadiness of their own, which is where the happy couple habits that keep a household grounded come in.

Look at the context before the child

The central practical message is to replace any behaviour judged difficult within its context. Fatigue, stress, transitions, illness and changes at home all raise the temperature. A child who is provocative on a normal day may be far more so after a disrupted night or a new baby in the house.

This is not about excusing behaviour, but about explaining it accurately so you respond to the real cause. If a child is unwell, for instance, the behaviour may be a symptom rather than a discipline issue; knowing scarlet fever signs or how to treat bronchitis helps you rule out illness first.

Household health matters too. Something as ordinary as intimate health problems can make an adult irritable, and children read that tension quickly, so looking after yourself is part of looking after them.

Responding with steadiness and support

Once you accept that behaviour is a response to environmental demands, your job shifts toward adjusting those demands where you can. Reduce the load during hard periods, name what you see without judgment, and keep expectations consistent so the child knows where the edges are.

Rewards are a common question here, and it is worth thinking through whether rewarding good actions actually builds the internal regulation you want. For the earliest years, choosing playthings thoughtfully, such as non toxic teething options, removes one small source of daily stress.

Finally, remember that difficult behaviour is common and usually temporary. Support, patience and a calm adult are often the most powerful tools available, and they cost nothing.

My hands-on take

In my own home, the single most useful change was to stop asking "why is my child like this?" and start asking "what happened today?" Once I began tracking sleep, hunger and transitions alongside the behaviour, the pattern became obvious: the hardest afternoons almost always followed a rushed morning.

I also learned to name what I saw rather than label the child. Saying "you are having a lot of big feelings right now" landed very differently from "you are being impossible". It did not fix everything, but it lowered the temperature for both of us, and it reminded me that the behaviour was communication rather than a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Does difficult behaviour mean my child has a disorder?

Not necessarily. Roskam notes these behaviours are common and normal in young children because of their immaturity, and there is no clear boundary between normal and pathological behaviour. Persistent, severe patterns are worth discussing with a professional.

Why does my child behave worse some days than others?

Context amplifies behaviour. Fatigue, stress, illness or a change such as a new sibling can make an already provocative or aggressive child much harder to manage on that day.

Is it wrong to call my child difficult?

The label depends heavily on the adult's personal history and culture. It is more useful to describe the specific behaviour and its context than to attach a general character judgment to the child.
